Robeson County 4-H Members Attend 2020 Citizenship North Carolina Focus

Lumberton, N.C. –

A delegation of Robeson County 4-H members attended 4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus, which was held virtually this year. The Robeson County delegation attended with over 200 youth and adults representing 56 4-H programs across the state. Delegates participated in facilitated discussions and activities related to the importance of advocacy, local government, state government, and action planning. Brooke Canady and Maggie Love were the teen 4-H members representing Robeson County at the June 15-17 conference. Staff members Shea Ann DeJarnette and Wendy Maynor also took part in the virtual experience. Through various conference sessions and facilitated discussions, delegates learned from leaders across the state and from other conference attendees.

NC Citizenship Focus

This afternoon was our first day of 4-H Citizenship Focus.  What are we focused on you might ask?  That is a good question.  Today we explored our youth voices.  Our youth learned that they have a voice and are able, in this day in age, to communicate important thoughts and issues for their age group, their communities, and help bring light and change to the world around them.
First let me back up and tell you about this 4-H opportunity.  Usually we gather in Raleigh to learn about government and youth roles within government.  Our youth meet with lawmakers and have the opportunity to see how things work.  Thanks to COVID this 4-H program is taking a virtual spin.  A spin that allows are youth to have an even more personal experience.
This year Brooke Canady and Maggie Love were gracious enough to take part in this first ever virtual Citizenship event.  Today they had the chance to meet other 4-H youth and learned about telling their story.  They had the opportunity to create a hashtag for something they wanted to share a message about.
They took those messages and found a way to express them in 240 characters or in a photo for social media platforms such as Twitter.  Then they expanded upon that to an elevator speech or a longer post such as a blog or even Facebook.
Our youth created the hashtags #farmerstrong and #bethevoice.  The message behind #farmerstrong has to do with people's lack ofknowledge andappreciation for farmer's and what they do.  After all we would be naked and hungry without them.  #bethevoice is an inspirational message for generation Z of standing tall, standing together, and making a difference through coming together rather than splitting apart.  Both had very strong and important messages we should be listening to.
Our youth will reconvene tomorrow afternoon for the next few sessions of NC 4-H Citizenship Focus.  Stay tuned to see what else they have to say.  To learn more about telling their story please go to https://passthemicyouth.ces.ncsu.edu/

4-H Summer Fun-Virtual Style

So much for the best laid plans.  COVID took out our plans we made in February for our Face to Face 4-H Summer Fun Program.  Not to worry we punted and rebooted and are excited to offer you the following virtual options.
-Please note unless otherwise stated programs are free.
-A supply list for each Summer Fun Camp will be emailed to you so you can make sure your child has what they need on hand to do the activities with us.  We have done our best to make sure you will have a selection of places to purchase items and plenty will be available.
-Each session will be a zoom session and done live so your child can interact with the staff and volunteers who are teaching activities.  Zoom links will be emailed prior to the camps.  (Please note the virtual overnight camp has recorded and live sessions to make it easier for you to build the schedule that will engage your child the most).
-Each camp length is based on studies of screen learning time for age groups, hence our 5-8 year olds we are looking at an hour, 9-13 two hours and our 14-18 year olds around 2-3 hours.
-Please note we will advertise other virtual learning opportunities for youth however the majority of camps listed here are coordinated by Robeson County 4-H Staff and open to our Robeson County 4-H members (must have an active profile on 4-H Online) only.  Virtual Overnight Camp and Horticulture Camp are open to youth around the state, 4-H Congress is a statewide 4-H opportunity.
-We are excited to offer online registration through Eventbrite.  Just click the link for the camp below to register.
-You may register for our camps on your mobile device through our app also.  To download our free app please go to your Apple or Google store and download "4-H Now!"  You will be able to search for our Robeson County 4-H app and download it to your smart deveice.
