NCDA Looking for Talent

Got to Be NC Agriculture announces NC Ag Star
Homegrown Voice Talent Search

RALEIGH – The Got to Be NC program, in partnership with its musical ambassador and local singer-songwriter Paige King Johnson, is creating a voice competition called NC Ag Star to help promote agriculture with young people.

The competition is open to anyone 13 to 22 years old. The winner will receive a prize package including a professional songwriting session, a song recorded and produced by a top Nashville studio producer and training from industry professionals.

Plans for the NC Ag Star’s homegrown voice talent search include live auditions, semi-finals and a finale. Throughout this competition, PCG Artist Development will offer free training and music education to competing artists via online zoom meetings and on-site workshops.

As host, King Johnson will be present at all events, serving as a promotional ambassador, highlighting the hard work and resilience of North Carolina farmers.

The competition will be structured with an early registration period from May through October, plus a North Carolina High School Tour in the Fall where select high schools in semifinal markets will receive a free concert by King Johnson presented by the NCDA&CS. Auditions begin in September in the four selected markets: Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh and Wilmington. Twelve finalists, three competitors from each market, begin virtual training for the Finale in Raleigh. Visit https://NCAGSTAR.com for more information.

Semi-final rounds will be held on the following dates and locations:
·  Sept. 16 at the N.C. Mountain State Fair in Fletcher
·  Sept. 18 at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market in Colfax
·  Nov. 4 at Martin Community College in Williamston
·  Nov. 6 at University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive

NCDA&CS Lifts Poultry Ban

RALEIGH – State Veterinarian Mike Martin announced today that the suspension of North Carolina poultry shows and public sales will be lifted as of Wednesday, June 1. All exhibitions, farm tours, shows, sales, flea markets, auction markets, swaps and meets pertaining to poultry and feathered fowl in North Carolina can resume.

On Thursday, May 12, the last High Path Avian Influenza control area was terminated, since there have been no additional positive cases of HPAI in North Carolina since April 11.

“Poultry owners are still encouraged to follow strict biosecurity measures and monitor their flocks for signs of illness,” said State Veterinarian Mike Martin. “This HPAI outbreak has affected 35 states and remaining on alert should be a priority. I would like to thank our poultry producers and those in the state that were impacted by the suspension for their cooperation as we worked to keep the poultry industry in North Carolina healthy. With warmer temperatures we hope the threat of HPAI is minimized for now.

“National trends show a decrease of new cases,” Martin said. “HPAI is still a threat to our domestic poultry and so it is still encouraged to practice strict biosecurity including keeping flocks away from wild birds whenever possible.” Poultry owners can report sick or dying birds to their local veterinarian, the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Veterinary Division, 919-707-3250, or the N.C. Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System 919-733-3986.

More information about High Path Avian Influenza is online at www.ncagr.gov/avianflu.

4-H Summer Camp Help Needed

Our North Carolina 4-H Camps & Centers are still hiring seasonal summer camp staff for our 2022 summer camp season.

We are especially in need of female counselors at our Eastern 4-H Center and male counselors at our Millstone 4-H Camp.

Attached are a few recruitment pieces for promotion.  The following are links to postings at each individual camp:
Working at summer camp is one of the hardest, but one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences a young adult can have in their lifetime.

Please feel free to share this email with any young adults you know who are seeking summer employment opportunities or may be interested.

We would especially love to see former 4-H'ers who have attended 4-H camp join our team.

Feel free to contact me directly with any questions or for more information.

Thank you for your help in sharing these opportunities with your network!

Sincerely,

The North Carolina 4-H Camping Team
