Happy Monday!

We know how busy you are so here is the 4-H Top 4….

-Friday, December 13, starting at 6:30 pm (program will start then please be checked in before) is 4-H Appreciation Night.  This is the night we honor our youth and volunteers for all their efforts over the last year.  The event will be held at the 4-H office.  Dress is come as you are.  No need to get fancy if you don’t want to (and we realize time doesn’t always allow).  Please don’t forget about our community engagement project.   This is the link to the flyer with more information.  For more information, or if you registered and can’t make it, please contact Wendy Maynor, 4-H Program Associate at Wendy_Maynor@ncsu.edu or (910) 671-3276.

-Looking for a Christmas present?  Think about 4-H overnight camp for those youth between the ages of 9-14.  We are scheduled to attend Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center the week of July 26-31, 2020.  If you pay before January 2 the cost for the total event will be half price-just $200.  You can reserve your slot now with a non-refundable $100 deposit and pay the rest (the other $100) before camp.  This is an incredible opportunity for any youth.  For more information please click on this link which will take you to the flyer.  To register and pay please come by our office and ask for Jessie Jones.  For more information contact Shea Ann DeJarnette at Shea_Ann_DeJarnette@ncsu.edu

-4-H Adult Volunteers it is already time to think about State 4-H Volunteer Leaders’ Conference.  This training and awards ceremony will be held Hilton Durham February 1-2.  The deadline to register and pay is January 2 at noon.  As in previous years we will pay the registration fee ($130) for the first 10 volunteers that register and you would just pay for the room ($55 per night double occupancy-$110 for single).  For more information on this fabulous training and networking opportunity please see the flyer.  For more information about this program contact Shea Ann DeJarnette at Shea_Ann_DeJarnette@ncsu.edu or (910) 671-3276.  To register and pay please come by and see Jessie Jones.  Gentle reminder we take checks or money orders only.  

-January 9^th we have new 4-H volunteer training scheduled at 6:30 pm at the office.  This is for all our first-time volunteers and any veteran volunteers who feel they need a refresher.  Of course, we will have a light meal for those who attend so please contact Jessie Jones or Wendy Maynor at (910) 671-3276 to register by January 6^th.

Please check the website and social media for updated. 2020 NC 4-H Horse Program Calendar of Events 2020 Youth Training Clinic Youth and adults interested in learning how to excel as competitors and coaches in competitive 4-H, FFA and inter-collegiate horse judging. horsebowl and hippology contests are invited to attend the training sessions. The clinic participants are divided into four categories based on their experience level (cloverbud, rookie, non rookie and adults/coaches) and are then divided into break-out groups that allow for individual attention and hands-on, critical thinking activities. The fee is $12.00 per junior and senior 4-H and FFA members (there is no charge for Cloverbuds, Coaches and Parents). For more information, visit the clinic website. Click here to register » State Horse Show Rule Changes for 2020- SUMMARY The age for the Little Britches division will be 8-13 The Little Britches division is open to all western-type horses. Therefore, 4-H'ers competing in Little Britches cannot cross enter in in the Jr. Ranch or Jr. Western divisions. Cloverbud barrels will now be offered in 2020! The class will follow general 4-H barrel racing rules with the following exceptions: Cloverbuds may only walk/trot and may have assisted help Cloverbuds can now do trail! The class will follow general 4-H trail rules but CB's may only walk/jog, have assisted help, and the pattern will consist of 3-5 obstacles. A 4-H'er may only compete for a total of 3 years COMBINED in the short stirrup and long stirrup division. Only two of those years may be over fences. Low hunter fence height has been lowered to 2'3" and long stirrup fence height has been lowered to 2' Long stirrup hunter hack height has been lowered to 2' and the Jr/Sr hunter hack height has been lowered to 2'3" The stadium portion of the Combined Training division will now be timed. 4-H'ers will be given a speed fault time which will penalize riders for going too fast, an optimal time which will penalize riders for going too slow, and a time limit. Refer to the revised 2020 Dressage Manual for more details. Rubber bands will NOT be permitted in the gaming division PLEASE NOTE: This list is just a brief summary of the changes for 2020. The NC 4-H Horse Program Rules and Regulations Manual is currently being updated and will be published on on the website soon. Please check back to be sure you are aware of ALL the rule changes that will take place across all events. Horse Bowl Rule Changes for 2020 One-on-ones will now be implemented in the Junior and Mixed divisions! All divisions will follow the senior division rules and scoring system. Equine Science, 5th edition by Parker has been retracted as a source for Eastern Nationals and therefore will also be removed from the NC 4-H reference list. Please remember that all counties that wish to compete in district horsebowl competitions in 2020, must submit 40 questions (using the template) by January 2. 2020 Horsebowl Questions Memo 2020 County Submitted Questions Template Hippology Changes for 2020 A new format of slide IDs will make an appearance at the 2020 State Hippology Contest! Juniors and Seniors only (no rookies) will have the opportunity to answer station-like questions during Slide IDs. Juniors will only be asked to do 2 stations and Seniors will complete five. CLICK HERE to see an example of the new format. 4-H to FFA National Champs Congratulations to NC 4-H'ers Madison Rosenbaum, Raegan Shepherd and Ally Clawson for being members of the 5th high team in Horse Evaluation at FFA Nationals. All of these girls are Johnston County 4-H'ers and represented Clayton High. Madison was also named 1st high overall individual! Madison and Raegan are members of the 2019 NC 4-H Horse Judging Team. NC 4-H Scholarship Deadlines The NC State 4-H Horse Program will now be offering two horse specific scholarships! Two high school seniors will receive the NC State 4-H Horse Program scholarship and one high school senior will receive the Dr. Robert Mowery scholarship.
