4-H Top 4 for the Week of July 6, 2020

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend celebrating the birth of the USA.  It is a hot one out there and we are doing our best to come up with some cool safe activities.  Please read below to learn more.

-If you have not downloaded the 4-H App please do so.  It is a great way to get instant reminders, you can add events to your electronic calendars, and register for programs with the click of a button.  So far everyone who has downloaded it and tried it, is pleased with how user friendly it is and how much time it saves you from having to come to the office.  To download our app, just go to the app store on your phone and download 4-H Now!  When you open that app search for Robeson County 4-H tap on it and you will be linked to us.  The download and app are free.

-We are excited to announce a brand new program.  This is a virtual 4-H Jr. County Retreat.  The event will be held virtually over Zoom and be led by our amazing teen 4-H County Council Officers.  Our youth will have the chance to work on a Citizenship project, take part in interactive Trivia Challenges, and try to work their way out of a virtual Escape Room.  The event will take place July 31, from 3-5 pm.  This event is free and open to all Robeson County 4-H members enrolled in 4-H Online.  To register please click this link:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/robeson-county-4-h-congress-registration-tickets-109689074976.  For questions please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette, 4-H Extension Agent.

-We still have spots available in our 4-H Summer Fun events;  Biotech, and Cloverbud day camp.  Please check the programs tab on the app and scroll to find the opportunity you would like to register your child for.  You can also register from our Summer Fun blog post found here:  http://robeson4-h.blogspot.com/2020/06/4-h-summer-fun-virtual-style.html

-The 4-H Showmanship Circuit has decided to go with a virtual show schedule this year.  You can learn more about that from this link.  That being said there are a couple of things we would like you to know.  This does not affect our 4-H poultry and rabbit shows at this time.  We have more time before that descion has to be made so we will keep families involved with our animal science program apprised of what happens there.  If you have any questions about this please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette

That is all we have for this week.  Stay Cool! We hope to see you online soon.
Thanks,
Wendy, Christy, and Shea Ann

4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit Announcement

This is a message from circuit organizers.  If you show goats, lambs, heifers or steers this would apply to you.

Thank you so much for your feedback and patience during this process.  The 4-H and Livestock agents that represent all the counties in the circuit have just gotten off a Zoom and we are at the point where we have to make a decision for the circuit this year.  In making this decision we took into account your feedback, conversations with parents and youth, the current conditions we are facing now and the plan the state 4-H office has set forward concerning reopening physical face to face opportunities when the state gets to phase 3.  Utmost in our hearts and minds are the wellbeing of our youth, 4-H families, volunteers and Extension staff who make this circuit possible.

That being said we had to make the hard decision to have a virtual circuit this year.  Although we will miss seeing everyone in person, we are excited to offer this opportunity to continue learning and give our youth the opportunity to show and compete this year.

This is going to look a little different and we will have rules and guidelines to you as soon as possible.  Registration will open next week with a reduced cost.  We will work on an abbreviated schedule of five shows.  To be recognized youth will need to participate in at least 3 shows.  Below are the dates of prompts registered participants will receive for their videos and the due date of the video.  Participants will receive feedback from the judges along with their new prompt.  The prompts will be instructions on how to show their animal in the video and questions they need to answer on video at the end of showing.
Prompt Dates          Video Due Date
August 1                   August 15
August 22                 August 29
September 5            September 12
September 19          September 26
October 3                 October 10

We know you have lots of questions and we are actively working on putting together written guidelines, information, and also plan a Zoom training before we get started.  Please contact your County 4-H or Livestock Agent with any questions and please know we are still working on this and want to make sure it is a fair learning and growth opportunity for all of our youth.
Thank you for helping us make the best better.

Information for our 4-H Adult Volunteers on Moving Forward

4-H Volunteers,

We are happy to announce NC 4-H has a plan in place to start working with youth in person face to face!
What we don't have is a definite date on when this will start.
We do want to share with you what we know now and as we have more information we will share it as it comes in.

-First and foremost this plan starts after Governor Cooper moves the state to phase 3.  At this time we don't expect that to be before mid July.
-Secondly, when working with youth we will be expected to follow all the guidelines set forth in the Governor's order, things such as wearing masks, washing hands, disinfecting all touch points will be required.  Also if there are number caps for social distancing such as currently only 10 people inside and 25 outside we will be expected to strictly adhere to this.  So for example, a club meeting that is indoors, includes two volunteers and eight youth, at that point you are maxed out on who can be there.  So please keep that in mind.
-One other thing  as we start to integrate this we will be working with our oldest youth in person face to face first.  Our youth 11 through 18 will be able to meet in person following all social distancing guidelines.  This is because after much research the state 4-H office feels these age groups will be best able to social distance, stay 6 feet apart in a room, and not feel the need to be on top of each other.  Often with our younger youth it is hard for them to understand why we need physical distance and they are drawn to each other, no matter how many times you remind them to separate they forget and are rolling around and chasing each other.  It is also harder for the younger ages to keep their hands away from their faces and from touching everything.  We want to make sure we keep not only our youth safe, but the families they will go home to.  Dr. Yoder said he hopes that we will be able to bring back the younger youth in the Fall but it will all be based on the COVID numbers in NC at that time.
-Once we are able to meet in person face to face each meeting will need to be approved prior to the event (by prior we do not mean a few minutes-we are talking at least two to four weeks prior).  Please email myself or Wendy as we have to go through the appropriate chain to get approval.

One big thing to remember is that we do not do this unless you are comfortable doing it.  If you are in a high risk group or feel that due to the size of a program or club it is best to wait and continue meeting virtually.  That is how we will proceed.

We will continue to have virtual programs, even after we can work in person face to face with youth for a variety of reasons.

Before any of this happens we will have a virtual volunteer training on the steps that need to be taken to safely meet in person as well as signage and guidelines you will need.  We want to be supportive of our families and their concerns as we slowly move into this new direction and we want our volunteers to know that we have your backs as well.

If you have any questions about this please contact me at Shea_Ann_DeJarnette@ncsu.edu.  In the meantime keep listening for phase 3 to open up here in NC and we will be in touch with a virtual training before we start back face to face.

Thank you for your time, patience, and resilience during this interesting time,
Christy, Wendy, and Shea Ann
