Robeson County 4-H Takes On the Big City

Our first state trip of the year for our 4-H members as we headed to Raleigh for NC 4-H Citizenship Focus.  Dirty Rascals Junior Master Gardener 4-H members Kennedi Lyons and Maggie Underwood earned the opportunity to attend the event this year held in Raleigh at the downtown Sheraton.
Once we arrived our youth headed straight to into team building to meet 4-H members from around the state.  It wasn't long before it was time to head to the main room for lunch.  Good food was just the fuel they needed to get up and move as part of strengthen exercise that made our youth step out of their comfort zones and have fun.
From there our 4-H members headed to workshops to learn about how a bill becomes law and how compromise is necessary to make things work.  They actually role played writing and getting a law passed.
After a brief break to move into our rooms it was time for dinner.  However dinner was not what everyone was expecting.  Thanks to Oxfam our 4-H members got a chance to experience food insecurities in other nations with a few members being served a full dinner, a little less then a third served themselves rice and beans, while the majority just got rice for dinner so they could experience what life is like for millions of people.  Don't worry, they didn't starve.  After the exercise was over dinner was served and everyone got a belly full.   However the exercise gave them a great deal to think about as they ate.
That wasn't the end of the night.  After a little processing of the evening's events it was time to have a little fun as our 4-H members danced the night away.  As the last song played they moved on to their rooms to get a good night's sleep before tomorrow's visit to the legislature.
