4-H is the Constant in Change

The following article was written by our own Wendy Maynor, 4-H Program Associate, for the Robesonian.  For more information you can find the article on the extension website at https://robeson.ces.ncsu.edu/2020/10/4-h-is-the-constant-in-change/

In a world of rapid change young people need the right mix of education and life skills to thrive. We are all adapting to the new normal of using technology to communicate for business and education. A lot of extracurricular activities that we counted on and enjoyed with our children are cancelled, and people are home-bound more than ever. Finding that one thing you can count on right now can be difficult when things are changing at such a rapid pace.

Wouldn’t you like to be a part of the one constant? Consider joining the Robeson County 4-H Program. We aren’t cancelling programs; we are adjusting and adapting to the new normal while facing new challenges, which is giving us an opportunity to think outside the box and grow. There is flexibility to adjust programming to virtual instead of face-to-face during these unprecedented times while still maintaining traditional programs and adding new ones. When we feel it is safe for our 4-H volunteers, members, and their families, we have plans in place to offer a hybrid program and face-to-face programming again.

The Robeson County 4-H Program is the perpetual, perfect avenue for youth to learn valuable life skills. Youth have the opportunity to make a direct impact on their peers, clubs, and community. They will develop leadership skills and gain more self-confidence along the way. The four values that members work on through fun and engaging programs are included in the 4-H Pledge.

So what is the 4-H Pledge? “I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service, and my HEALTH to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.”

Head stands for decision making, planning, organizing, problem solving, and using knowledge throughout life. Heart stands for strong personal values, positive self-concept, concern for others, cooperation, and communication. Hands stands for volunteering, community engagement, preparing for the world of work, science and technology literacy, and useful skills. Health stands for healthy lifestyles, character, ethics, stress management, and disease prevention.

Academic skills are important, but they are not sufficient alone to foster well-rounded, productive, and engaged youth. Young people need to develop a broad range of skills to evaluate situations, make good decisions, and apply their  knowledge in ways that meet the new demands of our changing social community and world. Skills like leadership, communication, public speaking, teamwork, critical thinking, and flexibility have been – and will always be – important for work and life. Wouldn’t you like to be a part of something that is educational, fun, positive, and is always constant in the midst of change?

4-H Grow Boxes

Please invite your families to join us for November's 4-H Grow Box on plant propagation. Get your 4-H'ers growing succulents, houseplants, airplants, seeds and more. Each box has all youth need to dig in and grow something fun, a magazine sharing the activity details (this was last month's), a supplemental website, a personalized postcard celebrating participation in 4-H.

Thanks to Cleveland County Extension's Charlie Godfrey and Julie Flowers and your 4-H'er for helping craft the content in this month's box on plant propagation. If any of y'all have any questions or an interest in customizing this to your county, I am glad to talk further. Thanks! Liz

Also to let you know.  NC 4-H has put out a plan for face to face programming with youth once we arrived at phase three.  After reviewing the plan (which has multiple trainings for volunteers, and families, as well as safety guidelines and procedures), consulting with our 4-H Volunteer Club Leaders, talking with our County Extension Director, and looking at our increasing numbers in the county, we have made the decision to continue with virtual programming through the end of the year.  We will reevaluate as we get closer to January and see how things look then to determine how we will start 2021.  Please note the safety of our youth and their families, volunteers, and our Extension staff, are primary in our minds as we make these decisions.  In the meantime we are able to offer a variety of fun and interactive programs virtually and we would encourage you to check them out and take part in them.

Thank you all for allowing us to be in your homes virtually this year.  We are looking forward to seeing our youth through zoom for some of the programs above.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Grow Boxes and Other Resources

Fall Edition
Leaves are changing. Temperatures are dropping. Fall is here!
Take a break from the screens with a Grow Box!
The September/October Grow Box on fall gardening was a hit! Did you miss your chance to get one? Don't wait - the November/December Grow Box is available now!

This box will be packed full of activities on propagation. We are shipping your young gardeners succulents to try leaf propagation, seeds to experiment with how to break seed dormancy, houseplant cuttings to root, and so much more!

Each box contains the activity materials, a magazine with activity instructions and information, and access to online resources for even more activities.

A new twist on a beloved JCRA Children’s Program tradition! Let’s celebrate the winter season with crafts from the garden. We will gather fun natural materials from the Arboretum gardens and pack them all up for you to pick up. You provide the table at your house to craft on while we meet over Zoom!

Parents or caregivers need to be “hands-on” during this activity since smaller hands will need supervision and might need a little extra help with some craft activities. The Zoom portion of the program will be recorded and available to registered participants in case you are unable to attend the live program or need to review a craft!

Episode 5 is Now Available
Did you know the Museum has our own “Ant-Man”? Meet Dr. Adrian Smith, Head of the Museum’s Evolutionary Biology & Behavior Research Lab. On social media, his exciting videos inspire curiosity and fascination as he provides unique, observable views of insects and their behavior. Join us for this illuminating conversation.
Listen Now
More about our guest: Adrian Smith, Ph.D. is an entomologist and media maker. Most days, you can find Adrian working in a glass-walled research lab at the science museum in downtown Raleigh, filming insects. In his research he’s discovered curiosities of the insect world ranging from ants with 200 mph jaw movements to fly maggots that live in dead trees and use their bodies as springs to fling themselves into the air. His more creative work centers on media production and sharing stories about science, discovery, and interesting bugs. At NC State, he teaches media making to scientists in his course, “Creative Media Production for Scientists.” He is the Head of the Evolutionary Biology & Behavior Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and a Research Assistant Professor in Biological Sciences at NC State.
