Spring is in full swing and we have lots of upcoming programs and events over the next few months. We are updating our website weekly with livestock shows and other events on the Calendar so please take a look. As always if you have any questions about any of these events please don't hesitate to reach out.

What: Wilson County Livestock Judging Contest (4 classes & reasons)

When: March 26, 2025 @ 1 pm

Where: Wilson County Fairgrounds, Wilson

Who: This event is open to all youth in 4-H or FFA ages 8-18.

What: Johnston County Livestock Judging Contest

When: April 15, 2025 @ 5:30 pm 

Where: Johnston County Livestock Arena, Smithfield 

Who: This event is open to all youth in 4-H or FFA ages 8-18

What: Nance Family Meat Goat Leadership Institute

When: May 3, 2025, Registration due by April 15

Where: E Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit, Raleigh 

Who: Youth ages 10-19 that have an interest in the Meat Goat Industry and would like to enhance their leadership skills. We cover a variety of topics such as Leadership, Ag Advocacy, Pasture Management, Nutrition, Fitting Goats, etc...

What: Advanced Livestock Judging Program

When: June 9-13, 2025, Registration due by April 15

Where: We will travel to a variety of farms over the 5 days. 

Who: Youth age 14-18 that have a strong desire to judge livestock competitively. We will select 10 youth to participate in this program.

NC 4-H Youth Livestock Webpage

What : East Coast Extravaganza

When: March 4-5

Who: Youth under the age of 21.  This is a livestock show for pigs, lambs, goats, and cattle.

Where: Johnston County Livestock Arena, Smithfield ***Location Change from Previous Years****

What: Youth Livestock Agent & Volunteer Leader Training

When: March 14-15

Who: This is open to any agents or volunteers that would like to learn more about the youth livestock program.  Topics include showing livestock, basic nutrition, animal health, training skillathon, judging, and quiz bowl teams.  More information on topics and the schedule will be released shortly.

Where: E. Carroll Joyner Beef Educational Unit, Raleigh

What: Wilson County Livestock Judging Contest

When: March 29 at 1:00 pm

Who: 4-H or FFA members, Top 3 teams and individuals will be recognized. Register at the event.

Where: Wilson County Fairgrounds 2331 US-301 Wilson

What: Johnston County Livestock Judging Contest

When: April 4 at 5:30 pm

Who: Three youth divisions (Jr, Int, Sr) and adult division. 4-5 classes, one set of questions, no oral reasons. Prizes to top two teams and top five individuals in each division. Sign up on the spot, no fee.

What : NC Sheep & Goat Roundup (New Event)

When: July 13-16

Who:  This event will be open to NC residents only.  This event will include market lamb, breeding ewe, market goat, breeding doe, and showmanship classes.  Additionally, we plan to have other educational contests such as public speaking, photography, livestock judging, and others.  More information to come.

Where: Carolina Classic Fairgrounds, Winston-Salem, NC

What: Supreme Skillathon Championship

When: This will be a culmination of scores from 7 different contests throughout North Carolina.  Youth will be allowed to drop their two lowest scores.  We will have three age divisions just like the State 4-H Contests.  The top Individuals will be recognized at the 2024 NC Cattlemen's Conference. More information is attached to this email.

Where: Multiple contests across NC.

We wanted to send a brief update out in regards to several programs that will be happening in early 2023.  If you have any questions or concerns please let us know.

Also, we would love to update our Livestock Show Calendar, so please share with us the details on your upcoming livestock events.  

What: Leap Into Sheep Program

When: Applications due December 15 (Pick up lambs January 14)

Who: This program is designed for youth that have never shown lambs before and would like to get involved in showing livestock.  The top 10 applicants will be selected and receive a lamb for $50.  Each youth will be set up with a mentor to assist them with the learning process.  Age requirements are 8 -19.  

Where: Please see attachment for counties of participation.

What: Nance Family Meat Goat Leadership Institute

When: February 4, 2023, applications are due January 13

Who: Youth ages 10-19.  This program is designed to assist youth that have a strong interest in Meat Goats to enhance their leadership skills.  Topics in the past have included visiting other farms, learning about general health of goats, meat processing, cheese making, and traditional leadership topics.  

Where: E. Carroll Joyner Beef Educational Unit, Raleigh

What: Perry & Doris Teeter Beef Leadership Institute

When: February 24-26, applications are due January 13

Who: Youth currently in High school ages 14-19.  This event is designed for youth that have a strong interest in the Beef Industry and would like to enhance their leadership skills. The top 20 youth from across North Carolina will be selected to participate.  

Where: Hickory, NC in conjunction with the NC Cattlemen's Conference

What: Youth Livestock Agent & Volunteer Leader Training

When: Date Changed to **March 14-15 **

Who: This is open to any agents or volunteers that would like to learn more about the youth livestock program.  Topics include showing livestock, basic nutrition, animal health, training skillathon, judging, and quiz bowl teams.  More information on topics and the schedule will be released shortly.

 As the weather is beginning to get warmer we have lots of opportunities involving the Youth Livestock Program.  In the coming weeks we have shows, clinics, and contests.  Please take a minute to browse through the opportunities below and also check out our website with additional events in your area. Who: Youth ages 9-18, open to any youth State-wide.  If you would like to participate you will just sign up at the event.

Who: Youth ages 9-18, open to any youth State-wide.  They will also have an adult division.  If you would like to participate you will just sign up at the event.

When: June 13-16

Who: Youth ages 14-19 (We will only select 10 youth to participate on this trip)

Where: We will be traveling to surrounding states to visit farms and learn more about livestock evaluation.

Summertime is here and we are charging forward planning multiple events.  Please take a moment to look over some of the activities below and think about participating.  Also, the state livestock group continues to update their website weekly with shows and other events.  So keep your eyes open for that

What: State Livestock Clinics (Deadline to enter June 18)

When: June 22 (Skillathon) and June 23 (Judging)

Where: Carroll E Joyner Beef Educational Unit, Raleigh

Who: Youth ages 8-18 that have a desire to learn more about the Livestock Industry.   Speakers will cover a variety of topics related to the industry.

What: Advanced Livestock Judging Clinics (Deadline to enter June 18)

When: June 29- Buncombe County, July 6 - Rowan County, July 13 - Wilson County

Where: We will be visiting multiple farms in the area of each county on there given day

Who: Youth ages 14-18, this program will be limited to the first 15 youth to register.  This is designed for youth that have experience judging and would like to enhance their skills as they prepare for the National Contests. 

What: Youth Beef Educational Workshop (Limited to 30 youth)

Date: July 15, 2021

Time: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm 

Location: Piedmont Custom Meats, Asheboro, NC

Who: High School Students, this program will be limited to the first 30 youth to register.

Cost: This program is completely free, and participants will be provided lunch.
