Embryology and Butterflies!

Calling all second and third grade teachers!  It is that time for little hands to help turn eggs in incubators and learn about life cycles as you hatch chickens and butterflies in the classroom.  Please note due to equipment limitations this will be open to the first 23 classrooms for embryology and the first 25 for the Butterfly Project.  Round 1 will run will run from March 2-April 3.  Round 2 will run from April 20-May 22.  You are more than welcome to do both but we ask that you sign up to do one curriculum during round 1 and the other during round 2 to give the optimum number of classrooms this opportunity.

 How it works is that we will train the teachers to implement the
curriculum and how to use the equipment.  We will load you what you need and supplement with our juried research based experiential curriculum and daily videos.  We will have as much fun as you are willing to have with the curriculum an your students will remember the experience for a lifetime.

Message on Embryology From Mary Fosnaught

 To all Agents & Teachers with 4-H Embryology Projects, 

I just spoke with Dr. Rebecca Mansall, our state poultry veterinarian, who confirmed with Dr. Mike Martin, our state veterinarian, that due to current issues with the spread of High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) all further placement of eggs and incubators in classrooms as part of the 4-H Embryology program will be suspended until further notice.  

All eggs currently being incubated in classrooms will be able to finish in the classroom.  

Thank you for your cooperation as we all work together to protect all flocks.

Soil to Seed Now Digital

Today May 12, 2021 From the food we eat, to the water we drink, to the places where we live and play, soil erosion and sedimentation profoundly affects our everyday lives. The loss of soil from our landscapes and its deposition into our waterways, reduce the ability of the land to be productive in supporting plant growth and the capacity of the water to nurture aquatic habitats, host recreation and have municipal usefulness. This curriculum focuses on the accelerated processes of erosion and sedimentation that transpire as a direct result of agricultural and construction development activities. Soil to Seed is designed to cultivate high school aged-youth in understanding the principles of erosion and sediment control. AND now it is in in digital format. Teachers this One is for You!

NC 4-H is 118 years old. That is a powerful statement if you stop to think about it. If you look into the history of 4-H, what you will find is an organizational ability to be flexible and responsive when major domestic or global change happens. This hasn’t changed as our country and world is in the middle of a pandemic.

NC 4-H is responding to the needs of young people and volunteers by way of the internet. Though we might look different, nothing has stopped. Keeping true to the 4-H motto, “Learn by Doing” programs online have also incorporated offline learning so that youth and families can explore content together. NC 4-H has reached existing and new audiences through the Virtual Summer Camp, 4-H Daily Sparks, and Virtual Summer Learning. 4-H youth have participated in long-standing programs online such as 4-H Presentations, 4-H Congress, and Citizenship Focus.

Now as we move into the fall, NC 4-H recognizes the need to push forward into the digital world a little differently. NC 4-H is flexing its muscle to encourage youth and adults to move more outside as we enter into the “Movember” challenge to encourage mental and physical health. Another addition to the fall is the 4-H Curriculum Website.

The 4-H Curriculum website focuses on the 4-H Volunteer and the K-12 Educator. The website offers:
