Greetings,

I hope this message finds you well. I am Dr. Trisha Mackey and I have the honor of serving as the Inaugural Director of the NC State College of Education’s Transformational Scholarships Program. The Transformational Scholarships Program provides scholarships totaling $40,000 over four years to promising high school students from Eastern North Carolina who will return to the region to teach after graduating from NC State College of Education. The program was made possible due to a generous charitable grant from the Anonymous Trust.

The inaugural class of Transformational Scholars represents 10 different eastern North Carolina counties and comprises eight elementary education majors, five mathematics education majors, two science education majors, and one middle grades language arts and social studies major.

It is now time to begin recruiting the next cohort of Transformational Scholars. As an NC State Extention Employee connected to our target communities, we would like to extend an invitation for you to assist us in nominating new students. Transformational Scholars are selected based on the following criteria:

  • their admittance to NC State as first-year students

  • their demonstrated financial need (as determined by the FAFSA)

  • a resident of an Eastern North Carolina county

  • their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • their commitment to the teaching profession

Please complete this form to nominate a student for an invitation to apply to the NC State College of Education's Transformational Scholarships Program. Students must complete the NC State General Application by November 1st to receive an invitation to apply to the program. Additionally, please share this message with your networks and encourage others to nominate future scholars.

If you have any questions about the Transformational Scholarships Program or the nomination process, please email us at transformationalscholars@ncsu.edu.

2023 NC Youth Institute

All high school youth are invited to join us for the 2023 North Carolina Youth Institute (NCYI), a program that provides a platform for youth to research and give recommendations towards global food security and understand key global challenges that range from access to potable water, poverty, human rights, engineering issues, and more.

  1. Write a paper: Youth select a country besides their own and research the challenges families face around food and write a paper with proposed community-based solutions.

  2. Youth present their paper to their peers at the in-person NCYI at NC State and work collectively to find common themes around global hunger.

  3. Participate in hands-on workshops. Youth will have a chance to explore hands-on sessions led by faculty across CALS to learn more about NC agriculture and food systems.

  4. Become a Borlaug Scholar. After participating in the NCYI, youth will be named a Borlaug Scholar by the World Food Prize.

Join us for a NCYI Q&A webinar on Tuesday, November 29th at 4pm to learn more, ask questions, meet NCYI alum and mentors. Register here and we will send you the zoom link.

The NCYI is hosted by NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and the Plant Sciences Initiative and is a part of the World Food Prize's Global Youth Institute. Youth will need to register and submit their paper (Registration will open soon) by March 13th, 2023 and the in-person, one-day NCYI will be held at NC State on Friday, April 14th, 2023.
