4-H Goat Show

   Folks the weather prediction for Saturday, September 27 is a little frightful so let's talk about what the plans are.

  If the fair decides to remain open we will be taking in animals for the barn starting at 8 am and that will run through 11 or until everything is full.  We are asking participants with poultry to make sure they arrive prior to 11 am to make sure their birds get blood tested.

Goat weigh in for the show starts at 11 am.  We are aiming to start the show around 2 pm.  Participants need to arrive at gate 7 at the fairgrounds-which is behind the livestock building (3750 Martin Luther King Jr Drive in Lumberton).  Please note this is the plan weather permitting.  If the fair decides to close or delay opening we will determine if there is going to be a goat show on this date or if we will reschedule it for the following Saturday.

Best way for us to communicate is via this blog and our Remind App.  We have set up a 2025 Livestock Show classroom and you can access it at @9fekhc on Remind,  As soon as we know something we will share with everyone.  Our primary concern is for your safety and that of your animals that you are transporting. 

We appreciate your patience with this process.  We can't control Mother Nature, and we need to listen to work with our partners to make sure everything goes smoothly.  We will let you know as soon as we know something.

Veteran's Day Celebrations

   

Below is a message from Chris Oxendine, the Director of Veteran Affairs in Robeson County about upcoming Veteran's Day Celebrations.  Please note this is a great Civic Engagement Opportunity for our youth.

      I wanted to share information about Veterans Day ceremonies being held on Monday November 11th, 2024, happening in Robeson County.  Please share this information with staff, family and friends.  This coming Monday November 11^th is Veterans Day, if you are able to please take some time to attend these events.  Veterans have fought and some never came home from fighting, many came home with physical injuries, and many came home with mental conditions.  They fought by putting their lives on the line in service of this great country so that we can have the freedoms we have today.  They did id unselfishly without a second thought.  A veteran is someone who wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America for an amount up to and including their life.  Please see the list below of ceremonies that will he held on Monday November 11th, in honor of Veterans Day.

Town of Fairmont will host a Veterans Day ceremony at the Heritage Center located on Main Street at 11:00AM.  Guest speaker will be Rev. Kerry Barr

Town of St. Pauls will host a memorial service at 11:00AM located at War Memorial building following all day festivities.

Town of Rowland will host a Veterans Day luncheon at 11:00AM located at Depot.

Town of Pembroke will have a Veterans Day parade at 10:00AM starting at Pembroke Elementary and ending at UNC-Pembroke / Railroad St. next to Burger King.  There will be a Veterans Day ceremony following parade at 11:00AM located at Milton R. Hunt Memorial Park, guest speaker will be Eric Oxendine.

The DAV chapter 7 will be hosting a Veterans Day ceremony at 11:00AM at the DAV building located on Hwy 41 going to Fairmont.

Youth Advocacy

 This is a message shared by Dr. Mike Yoder to all 4-H Agents.  

Good Afternoon!

 

I hope you're doing well. My name is Kelvin and I'm the Director of Community Engagement at NC Child. Applications are now open for our 2024-25 Youth Advocacy Council! The YAC gives high school students the opportunity to build advocacy skills by meeting with state and local elected officials about youth mental health issues. We are seeking students who are representative of all of North Carolina, including non-college-track students, students of color, and rural students. The NC Child Youth Advocacy Council is a unique opportunity for high school students across North Carolina to have their voices heard and be part of meaningful change.

• Advocate for policies that impact youth, especially around youth mental health
• Engage with policymakers to help shape decisions at the state and local levels
• Develop skills in leadership, advocacy, and communication

 

Who Should Apply?

We are seeking high school students (grades 9-12) from diverse geographic areas of North Carolina, with a range of backgrounds and experiences. You don’t need prior political experience; you just need a passion for creating change and the confidence to share your unique perspective on the issues affecting young people. We especially encourage students from all walks of life, whether on a college or non-college track to apply.

 

Program Details:

• Term: January 1 – August 1, 2025
• Meetings: Hybrid (virtual and in-person), with stipends and reimbursement for travel
• Stipend: You will receive a flat-rate stipend for your involvement ($750)

Since its creation almost ten years ago, YAC members have tackled issues like the vaping epidemic, youth mental health, and access to resources for their peers. If interested, this is your chance to bring your voice and passion to the table for the next generation of youth-led policy solutions!

This is the season for giving and we are asking for your help.  One of our 4-H Endowments that would benefit our youth in perpetuity is close to being finished and we would like your help getting it to the top.

    Robert Wilkes 4-H Entrepreneurship Endowment is to honor the outstanding career of a gentleman who supported Robeson County 4-H Youth Development programs for more than 50 years.  Always being a visionary, he successfully moved into different positions and finally bought a business and expanded it to fill a growing need within Robeson County.  His vision allowed him to be successful in business, family, and with friends.  

  Mr. Wilkes had a vision for 4-H in Robeson County to make sure every child has the opportunities he had to learn in a safe and nurturing environment and achieve their full potential in this ever-changing global society, so they too can be the best in their chosen field.  It is fitting that this endowment will be utilized for youth achievements in the area of entrepreneurship and leadership.  Always blazing a path, Robert is opening the door for current and future entrepreneurs encouraging, supporting and envisioning our futures.

Message on HPAI From Dr. Mike Yoder

 Good evening,

Effective immediately, all 4-H poultry events and activities, including poultry shows are to be stopped until further notice.  Please see the following link for the press release provided by NCDA&CS earlier today.

Embryology projects are affected in the following way.  Those projects that have had eggs placed and are currently underway may continue but no new eggs will be placed.  If you have chicks in place for a fall show, those birds can stay in place until further notice.  Strict adherance to bio-security protocols, including checking birds daily for signs of HPAI should be practiced.  Dr. Mary Fosnaught will provide further guidance regarding these projects and others that may currently be underway.

Extension and 4-H stand with NCDA&CS in  their attempts to curtail the spread of this disease, thereby protecting the North Carolina poultry industry.  Please direct all questions to Dr. Mary Fosnaught or one of the Area Poultry Agents.

4-H Online is Back!

Well folks it's back!  4-H 2.0 has been rolled out for North Carolina for 2022 and it is time for you to re-enroll your family, child, and or update your volunteer status.  When you are done we will receive an email saying it has been submitted and we will approve it.  

 Adult Volunteers when you start you need to choose that you are a level 1 or level 2 volunteer.  Most of you will be level 1.  There is a training video you must watch in its entirety (even though you watched it last year).  The system will let us know if you watched it and then we will be able to re-enroll you.  Also please make sure to check your screening section.  It is important to fill out as much of that as you can.  

 

Parents please double check your child's clubs and if the are a member at large please make sure it is Robeson County not Alamance.  If you get stuck in the club section just back out and come back to it.  We are asking that everyone get registered by the end of January.

A Message from our State 4-H Leader on National 4-H Center Petition

As you may have heard, the National 4-H Council is accepting bids to sell the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD.  The National 4-H Center has provided decades of developmental and networking opportunities for thousands of 4-H youth and will be difficult to replace.  Four-H alumni and friends, so inclined, are signing a Petition to halt the sale of the Center.  Please share this information with your 4-H alumni, friends, supporters and anyone you believe may be interested in this effort.

Thoughts and Prayers for our 4-H Family

Beverly Chambers, a 4-H Volunteer for 22 years and club leader for Spiritual Generations 4-H Club, passed away overnight.  She had been battling COVID and had been hospitalized for more than a month.  

Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, her 4-H family, and all those whose lives she touched.  At this time arrangements have not been announced.  As soon as we know more we will share it with you.  

 

Please remember Beverly's family in your thoughts and prayers.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Welcome to 2021

 

 Wishing you a Happy New Year!  Probably one of the most anticipated New Year’s ever, and we are excited about 2021 and here are a few reasons why.

-January 18th is the anticipated kick off to 4-H Online 2.0.  This version should be slightly more user friendly and we are hoping will make it easier for all of you to get reregistered for the new year.  When it is rolled out we will let you know and have you go in and completed your “paperwork” for this year.

-Our 4-H app has been a huge success.  With just 6 months under our belt it is at almost 100 downloads.  Everyone who has used it has loved it.  We think it will make it easier than ever for you to register for everything 4-H.  If you haven’t downloaded please do.  It is a free download from your App Store.  Just go to 4-H Now! And download that.  When you open the app search for Robeson a county 4-H and click on that.  It will keep you up to date and send you notifications (if you allow it to) of deadlines and new programs.

-It has been several years since we have done this but we are excited to be hosting a project record book workshop for youth and volunteers over Zoom, January 5th at 2pm.  Our plan is to walk everyone through their record book so they only have to type and finish their stories and “express their self” section.  Registration is open on the app for this program.

-Volunteers...Your first training opportunity is around the corner.  state Volunteer Leaders Conference will be virtual this year.  There is a fee that we will pay for those that attend.  So please make sure to register (guess where) in the app,

-We are excited to announce two new SPIN clubs for this year.  Our first will start in February and be the Art Hub 4-H Club.  This club will meet virtual once a week for six weeks and focus on Fine art.  The second club is our Teen Club.  This will also start in February and meet monthly.  It is open to all our 4-H members 14 and above, focusing on leadership skills.  We will have more details as we get closer to our 4-H 2.0 rollout.

-Our cooking with Ms. JoJo series was such a success we are working on another series for our youth that will be split by age level again.  Stay tuned for more information and dates for that.

-Also we are excited to be a part of a citizen science sourdough experiment.  We will be doing this live with our youth mid to late January so that we can report our results with the state before February 14th.  Stay tuned for more information on this really cool project.

-Please note the deadlines this month to register turn in scholarships, honor club applications, and project records and portfolios.  If you have misplaced your calendar you can scroll to the bottom of this blog to find the google calendar.  You can also find it on our app under the schedule button.  We try to keep it up to date with each change.

-Please note this blog and our app are the places to find the most up to date information and links concerning our 4-H program.  This blog is also linked under the news button on the app in case you would like to refer to it from your phone.

That’s a lot for our first day of 2021.  Although our office is closed today, know that we will be there next week and will keep our app up to date so you can register for programs 24/7.
