Happy Monday!

Hope everyone enjoyed thier weekend and the Super Bowl?

Just want to take a moment and say we have had our first two club meetings of the year.  Young Leaders had their organizational meeting in January, and the Art Hub 4-H Club was finally able to take the field trip to the NC Museum of Art this weekend after have to postpone a couple of times due to weather.  Congrats to our club leaders for hitting the road running in 2026.  We also know that the Dirty Rascals JMG 4-H Club has their schedule completed and will start meeting in March.  If you are interested in any of these or other club opportunities please contact Jade McNeill at jade_mcneill@ncsu.edu.

1.  Project Record Books and Portfolios are due to our office by the end of the day.  We added an extra week in due to snow, so we hope to have your record books in today.

2.  Volunteer Launch Pad  

We are excited to announce a virtual learning opportunity for our volunteers.  the 4-H Volunteer Launch Pad will be a quarterly virtual training opportunity for volunteers in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Hoke, and Robeson Counties.  We have determined topics based on the needs expressed by our volunteers in these counties who responded to a survey we sent out in December.  To learn more about the trainings please click this link or check it out on the app under programs.

3.  Project Record Book Judging

  On February 16th we will be holding our annual project record book judging.  This is a chance for you to learn about project records if you haven't seen one before and  learn first hand what it takes for a good one.  You can judge one or more if you like.   If you will be coming please register on Eventbrite so we can make sure to be set up for all our judges.  To register just click this link and answer the questions.  You can also register on the app. 

4.  Re-enrollment

Volunteers and members need to be reenrolled in 4-H Online.  If you have not reenrolled by the end of the month you will no longer get emails from us, so please make sure to take a moment and renroll on 4-H Online.

4-H Top 4 for the week of January 12

 

Let's get things started in Style!

1.  Sewing Lab

-Sewing Lab is open on Saturday, January 17th.  This is when folks come in and have the opportunity to sew.  It is not lessons just a day to utilize equipment and space to get projects done.  The lab is open from 8:15-5:15 and you must pre-register and pay at the Extension Office.  The cost is $20 and you will have access to the lab all day long which includes; sewing machines, cutting mats, tables, ironing boards, irons, and more.  Please register and pay prior to January 17th.  If you are mid project and need some space to finish a project this is for you!  Contact Wendy Maynor, Family Consumer Science Agent at (910) 671-3276 or wendy_Maynor@ncsu.edu for more information.

2.  The Art Hub 4-H Club Meeting

-The Art Hub 4-H Club will have their first meeting of 2026 on January 24 at 8:30 am.  For more information about this meeting please check out the Eventbrite registration.  All youth must be registered for 2026 in 4-H Online and registered on the Eventbrite Registration to attend this meeting. 

3.  4-H Online:

Happy New Year! 4-H Style!

   

It is amazing how fast a year grows and we just want to take a moment to say thank you for all you have done in the last year.  What better way to do that then in photos?  Check out our 4-H Year in Review right here.

Top 4 for the New Year!

  1.  4-H Online:

 2.  4-H Achievement Program

    As we enjoy what we have accomplished now is a time to set our 4-H goals for the new year.  One way to do that is with the 4-H Achievement Plan.  This downloadable form is a great way to plan and earn achievement levels.  Each person can only obtain one level per year.  This year's achievement records are due to the county 4-H office no later than November 16th.  We will hold a virtual session about this program on January 12 at 6 pm.  Please register on Eventbrite to be part of this informational session.  The link is:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1979552005336?aff=oddtdtcreator

3. Volunteer Leaders Conference

  Volunteer Leaders the NC Volunteer Leaders Association Conference is right around the corner.  It will be held from January 30th to February 1st at the Greensboro-High Point Marriott Airport.  This event provides 4-H volunteers with valuable opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge through workshops and activities designed to foster positive learning experiences for young people across the state.  The weekend kicks off on Friday with dinner and engaging group activities, followed by a full Saturday schedule featuring educational workshops, district meetings, and award recognition. Participants will also have ample opportunities to network and reconnect with friends, and the event will close on Sunday morning with inspiration, the installation of incoming officers, and renewed commitment. 

Any approved 4-H volunteer in 4-H Online can attend! 4-H Top 4 for the Week of August 28, 20203

 

Well folks Summer is officially over and we are excited to jump back into regular 4-H Fall activities.  At this point everyone is back in school and we hope you are already having a great year!

Please note, we have a lot of new folks in 4-H after our wonderful summer program and we would like to welcome them to the Top 4.  This is our version of a weekly newsletter with information about upcoming programs.  You can register from the links posted here or if you need to check on schedules, feel free to register from our 4-H AppIt is a free download from your app store.  Just search for 4-H Now!.  Download it, and when you open it you should be able to find Robeson County 4-H.  On our app we have our blog (which is an electronic newsletter), our current programs listed under programs where you can register for upcoming events, a calendar of annual events, and more.  It is a great resource and makes program registration easy.

With that being said on to the top 4!

Excellent Egg Contest-This is for youth ages 8-18 who raise laying hens.  The $18 registration fee covers the costs of the program and includes awards and a t-shirt.  Participants will be required to watch a training (either live or recorded), complete a supplemental portion to the contest, submit 6 eggs for judging.  Then on November 21 watch the Zoom to see if they are a winner.  The deadline to register and pay via Eventbrite is September 8.  The registration link is:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/4-h-egg-cellent-egg-contest-robeson-county-tickets-707759296107?aff=oddtdtcreator or you can register through our 4-H app under programs.  The initial Zoom training will be held virtually September 26.  Eggs and supplemental sections due to the 4-H office by November 7.  If you have questions about this program please contact Taylor Chavis, Extension Livestock Agent at tbhunt@ncsu.edu.

4-H 7 County Volunteer Training:  Just a gentle reminder that our next 4-H adult volunteer training will take place in Bladen County on September 18.  We will provide transportation from our office for this event.  The topic of this training is Teen Opportunities. When our youth hit 13 and even 14 a whole new world of 4-H Activities open up for them and each of them build on different things. Planning for those programs needs to start as they are in the 9-13 age range. Do you know how to move them forward and how to help them focus on different areas to help them be successful in the areas of ARI, Scholarships, and Honor Club to just name a few? Check out this training to see how you can help shape the future for our 4-H Teen Leaders and different programs they can take part in. Artastic- This is a free visual arts competition for our 4-H members in Robeson County ages 5-18.  You must have an active registration in 4-H Online to be eligible and have completed the  submitted art work since October 1, 2022.  Youth may submit as many items as they like. however we recommend only one per category because otherwise they will be competing against themselves.  Our age division will be cloverbuds (5-7) which is non competitive, each participant will receive a ribbon for their efforts.  Jr. Division 8-13, and Senior Division (14-18) will be competitive.  Youth will receive prize money and ribbons.  All entries after judging will be taken and entered into the Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair where they will be judged and can be picked up at the end of the fair with their premium monies and ribbons if they should win any.  Please register items on line at:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/4-h-artastic-tickets-707760730397?aff=oddtdtcreator items need to be dropped off at the 4-H office by 5 pm on September 13.

4-H Top 4 For May 1, 2023

 We are 4 months in and it is time to focus on Summer and Fall already.  Hang on because our 4-H Top 4 is jam packed this month!

-Our new 4-H Family Seed Saving Club will take place May 4 & 11 from 6-8 pm.  Come learn about seeds. Everything from identifying, saving, crafting and even cooking and eating seeds. It's a great way to garden as a family and keep those generational traditions going with a new twist. We promise lots of fun and hands on fun for the entire family. Not to mention seeds. Lots of seeds for planting and swapping. 4-H Top 4 for the Week of November 21, 2022

 

Good morning everyone and Happy Thanksgiving week.  We have had a lot going on in our office (please check it out on the blog which you can find on the app under news or at https://robeson4-h.blogspot.com/) and know you are doing your best to keep up with deadlines and reminders....so please see below for the rest of the year.

-Tomorrow, November 21 is the deadline to register for 4-H Appreciation night.  The Whoville Fun Factory is our theme and we promise it will be a ton of fun.  It will take place at our office on Friday, December 9 starting at 6:30 pm.  Our plan is to have a food truck (if we have enough folks registered) and you will pick up your tickets inside when you register to order your meal.  Then we will have the awards ceremony on the big screen.  After the awards there will be games, tree decorating, a hot chocolate bar, snacks, a scavenger hunt, and soooooooo much more.  This will be a fun event for everyone involved with prizes, smiles, and just a little time to socialize and make memories.  So please come and show us your 4-H Spirit.  You can register online under programs, or by using this link:  https://www.eventbrite.com/myevent?eid=443609135867  For more information about this event please go to https://robeson4-h.blogspot.com/2022/10/4-h-appreciation-night-at-whoville-fun.html

-Young Leaders 4-H Club meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, November 22 is cancelled.

-To assist those completing Project Records we will be having a couple of virtual help sessions.  Ms. Wendy and I will be available via a zoom link to assist you with your questions.  Our two current dates will be December 14 at 4 pm and January 4 at 4 pm.  Since this will be an open working workshop we will email the link in the top 4 that is emailed.  We will not be publishing it for safety reasons.  So please check your email or contact Wendy Maynor at wrmaynor@ncsu.edu for the link.  Pre registration is not required for this event. Project and Cumulative record books are due January 30, 2023.

-NC Volunteer Leaders' Conference will be held February 2 & 3 in Durham.  The event will have informal workshops on Friday evening and workshops and awards on Saturday.  The event will end before 5 pm on Saturday.  There are several options for the event.  The first is full time which is Friday and Saturday.  The second is a Saturday only registration which includes the award luncheon.  Then there is an awards luncheon only option.  You may choose to come up on Friday or Saturday and spend one night.  We will make the hotel reservations, rooms are $120 per night.  As in past years we will be happy to pay the registration for the conference and you will be responsible for the cost of your room.  Those who register and do not attend will be responsible to pay back the conference registration fee to Robeson County 4-H.  Please use the Eventbrite link below to register and pay (if necessary).  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nc-4-h-volunteer-leaders-conference-robeson-county-tickets-472614632087

Hoping this beautiful Day finds you well and in good health and spirits.  We have had a lot going on after the fair trying to finalize everything there and are looking forward to the rest of this calendar year.  I would like to remind everyone if you download the app you will be able to register for programs quickly and easily from there (under programs), or calendar with upcoming programs is also on the app (under calendar), and under news you can see the latest information on our blog.  To download our app go to your app store and download 4-H Now!.  When it downloads, open it and choose Robeson County 4-H.  It is a free download and the easiest way to keep 4-H at your finger tips.

-We have some awesome volunteers and the time has come for you to nominate a deserving 4-H Volunteer for Volunteer of the Year. The Robeson County 4-H Volunteer Hall of Fame was created in 2009 thanks to the vision of Dr. Eddie and Mrs. Brenda Locklear who created an endowment to support the Volunteer Hall of Fame.  One current 4-H Volunteer will be chosen per year to receive this prestigious award.  Volunteers may only win the award once in their career.  If a nominee has been nominated but not selected in previous years, their form may be resubmitted.  The 4-H staff members are not eligible for the award and may not make nominations.  Nominations forms for the 2022 Robeson County 4-H Volunteer Hall of Fame must be received by November 4.  You can find a link to the nomination form on your app or by clicking this link:  https://forms.gle/akgtv9oY7CBTV3KH8

4-H Top Four, Labor Day Edition

   Hoping everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a long weekend and celebrate Labor Day.  We are excited about the opportunities coming up.  For the fast breaking information please make sure to download the 4-H App.  You will find it in your app store under 4-H Now!  When you open it Robeson County 4-H should pop up or you can search for it and click on it.  In our app we have breaking news, our blog, social media, survey's, and more.  It makes 4-H communication easy and handy.

-4-H Volunteer Conference of Southern States will take place October 6-9 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton Georgia.  There will be both in person and virtual opportunities making this a truly hybrid conference.  For those volunteers who have attended in the past they have told me it was a remarkable training opportunity.  Other than that all they will say is, 'what happens at Rock Eagle stays at Rock Eagle."  If you are interested in learning more about this conference please check out their website at:  http://www.4hvcoss.com/  Registration is available on the app and on their website.

-Fair-The Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair is right around the corner, September 30-October 8.  Booth set up will take place the Wednesday and Thursday prior to the fair opening.  This year we will be doing one big county wide 4-H booth and we need your help.  Our theme this year is, "You Belong in 4-H".  We would like to set up cutout photos of your child with a QR next to it.  The QR codes will go to a video of your child explaining what their favorite "H" (head, heart, hands, or health) is and why.  We hope that they will share a favorite 4-H story, maybe what 4-H has done for them, maybe their most valuable something learned...the sky is the limit.  All we need you to do is shoot the video of your child telling us about their 4-H experience (landscape works best), and send a photo.  You can email them to Shea Ann DeJarnette at sadejarn@ncsu.edu, and we will take it from there.  If you would like to help set up the booth we will send that information out next week with times and dates that we plan to be there and you and your children can come on by and help out.  Deadline to get your videos and photos to us will be Friday September 23, by 5 pm.

-Family 4-H Clubs-We have been listening to our SPIN Club parents and we would like to get everyone's opinion.  We are looking at starting three 4-H Family SPIN Clubs.  These are clubs that would meet for a total of at least 6 hours (either three two-hour sessions, or two three-hour sessions).  The first three clubs would be a Seed Club, Christmas Craft Club, and a Cooking Club.  Parents and youth would learn together and then we would spilt into adjoining rooms for our activities.  We are looking at timing all three clubs to center on big events happening at the Robeson County Farmer's Market (Seed club/Seed Swap, Christmas Crafts/Very Local Holiday Festival, Cooking Club/Summer Extravaganza).  We are looking for your thoughts, and your thoughts about participating.  At this time there would be no cost for any of these club experiences.  We would appreciate it if you could please take a moment and give us your feedback via an anonymous google form that can be found here: https://forms.gle/r8JtxX9J9RSzMG4A9  There is also a similar survey on our app under the survey button in the lower left corner.

 Happy back to school to all of our 4-H Members and Families!  For some of you you are a few weeks into the new school year and some are starting back today.  Please know we are excited about the opportunities that await you this year and hope that this school year is a fun, safe, and awesome learning adventure.

  That being said let's move forward with our 4-H Top 4 for the week of August 29, 2022.  For those of you not familiar with the Top 4 this is where you can see the next upcoming activities, sign up for things (either here or on our app) and stay in touch with all things 4-H.  

-Cumberland County Fair.  If you have items you would like to submit into the Cumberland County Fair Home Exhibits competition you can drop them by our office with your name, birthdate, address, email, phone number, and category.  Drop off deadline is 10 am on August 30.  Please drop off items at our office.  We will pick items up and return them to our office for pickup September 12.  For more information on their categories you can go to their website at http://www.crowncomplexnc.com/events/cumberlandcountyfair

-Fair-The Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair is right around the corner, September 30-October 8.  Booth set up will take place the Wednesday and Thursday prior to the fair opening.  This year we will be doing one big county wide 4-H booth and we need your help.  Our theme this year is, "You Belong in 4-H".  We would like to set up cutout photos of your child with a QR next to it.  The QR codes will go to a video of your child explaining what their favorite "H" (head, heart, hands, or health) is and why.  We hope that they will share a favorite 4-H story, maybe what 4-H has done for them, maybe their most valuable something learned...the sky is the limit.  All we need you to do is shoot the video of your child telling us about their 4-H experience (landscape works best), and send a photo.  You can email them to Shea Ann DeJarnette at sadejarn@ncsu.edu, and we will take it from there.  If you would like to help set up the booth we will send that information out next week with times and dates that we plan to be there and you and your children can come on by and help out.  Deadline to get your videos and photos to us will be Friday September 23, by 5 pm.

-Family 4-H Clubs-We have been listening to our SPIN Club parents and we would like to get everyone's opinion.  We are looking at starting three 4-H Family SPIN Clubs.  These are clubs that would meet for a total of at least 6 hours (either three two-hour sessions, or two three-hour sessions).  The first three clubs would be a Seed Club, Christmas Craft Club, and a Cooking Club.  Parents and youth would learn together and then we would spilt into adjoining rooms for our activities.  We are looking at timing all three clubs to center on big events happening at the Robeson County Farmer's Market (Seed club/Seed Swap, Christmas Crafts/Very Local Holiday Festival, Cooking Club/Summer Extravaganza).  We are looking for your thoughts, and your thoughts about participating.  At this time there would be no cost for any of these club experiences.  We would appreciate it if you could please take a moment and give us your feedback via an anonymous google form that can be found here:  https://forms.gle/xoMqPbCb838T2G647  There is also a similar survey on our app under the survey button in the lower left corner.

Good morning!  Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and if you had spring break hope it was great, and if you are on spring break now...what a perfect day to sleep in!  Here are some upcoming programs available for registration in the app.

-Adult volunteers, did you miss the Volunteer Leaders Conference this year?  Are you looking for an event to get all your training hours in for the year and maybe meet other volunteers from across this state and get ideas, have some fun, and maybe even come back energized for 4-H and life in general?  Think about registering for the 4-H Volunteer Spring Workshop which will take place Saturday, May 21 in Raliegh at the Jane S. 4-H top 4 for the week of March 21, 2022

   It is March and things are wonderful because we are seeing your smiling faces again.  In case you missed it we had County Activity Day this weekend and we are proud of each youth who got up there and gave it their best shot.  So proud that we can say 100% of those registered participated this year which is the first time that has happened.  Also, everyone has the opportunity to move forward to District Competition this year.  District Activity Day (DAD) will be held June 24th in Kinston at Lenoir Community College.  For those eligible, please don't forget you need to sign up with Wendy Maynor for a practice session well in advance of DAD to attend.  Ms. Wendy can be reached at wrmaynor@ncsu.edu.

-Young Leaders 4-H Club is cancelling their meeting for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 22.  Please note the clubs next meeting is scheduled for April 26.

-Teen Leader 4-H Club- Is a brand new SPIN Club open to all 4-H members ages 13-18.  What the club does will be up to our teen leaders.  They will go on a Leadership Road Trip and create projects, programs, and activities that they will lead.  With the help of adult partnerships that they create.  Sit back and watch out as our teens move forward with some fun things for themselves, our volunteers, and younger members.  The first club meeting takes place at the Extension office on March 31, at 5:30 pm.  You can register for this club on the app under programs or by clicking this link.

-Volunteer Spring Day is a brand new in person event for our 4-H Adult volunteers.  They will have the opportunity to travel to Raleigh for business, a day of workshops, and well a little fun that you might have missed by the NC State 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference being cancelled.  Thanks to our United Way Funds we will be paying for half of your registration fee for the day.  Volunteers you won't want to miss it.  To register you can go on the app under programs or by clicking this link.

-Animal Science- It's that time to sign up for animal science.  This is the program where youth get animals to raise and will show them at the fair.  To be eligible for the 4-H animal science project youth must be active in the 4-H Online system.  Youth may complete up to 3 different animal projects.  If you are showing your own animal you must complete an application and email a photo of the animal to 4-H Extension Agent Shea Ann DeJarnette at sadejarn@ncsu.edu. This animal counts as one of your three projects. However you do not need to pay the registration fee for the animal.  Each child participating in the project will receive an Animal Science polo shirt. If you are showing your own animal (applies to goats, rabbits, cattle or lambs) and none provided by 4-H there is just a $15 for the shirt. register you can go to 4-H Animal Science under programs on the app and click register or click on this link.

4-H Top 4 for the Week of March 7, 2022

 

Couldn't resist the March 4-H throwback picture to start our week off.  March is here and 4-H is in full swing and excited about upcoming events!  Please make sure to check deadlines below and all programs will be listed in our app under programs.

-5 County Volunteer Revolution training is tonight starting at 6:30pm.  Volunteers who are registered will be emailed a link for this training.  It will be held virtually.

-Dirty Rascals JMG 4-H Club will be meeting tomorrow starting at 5:30 pm.  Registration for this and all club meetings for March can be found on the app under programs.  You can register for the JMG meeting by clicking this link.

-Adult Volunteers, if you are interested in taking part in District Project Record and Portfolio Judging the deadline to register is March 15.  This opportunity will take place in Raleigh on April 25-27.  

-4-H Adult Volunteers your spring workshop will be held at the Jane S. McKimmon Center in Raleigh on May 21 from 8:30am to 5:30pm.  Registration is currently open thru April 22.  To register you can click this link or go to programs under the app to register and pay.  The cost of the training is $30 dollars and includes a light breakfast, lunch, and conference supplies.  Thanks to our United Way funds we will be paying almost half so the registration fee for our volunteers will be $18.  We will also provide transportation.  Registration deadline is April 21 at 5 pm.   If you would like to pay with a check please stop by the office to register and pay.

4-H Top 4 for the Week of February 28, 2022

   It's hard to believe that it is already the last day of February.  We have had so many things happening already this year!  Big Shout out to the Dirty Rascals JMG 4-H Club and Young Leaders 4-H Club for hitting their strides and being our first two clubs to have in person club meetings this year.  Don't forget folks if you are not registered in 4-H Online you will not be getting emails from us, which means you will miss out on programming announcements, reminders, and updates.  So please if you haven't already, please register.

    -Today our 4-H mask policy is adjusting.  Based on recommendations from our state 4-H office we will follow in line with our local school system.  So starting today masks will be optional for 4-H indoor events.  We ask that everyone be kind and respectful of anyone's choice to wear or not wear a mask.  To learn more about our mask policy please click this link.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette at sadejarn@ncsu.edu

-Tomorrow, Tuesday March 1 at 8 am is the deadline to register and pay for the State Turkey Project.  If you have a child who would like to raise and show turkeys this year they need to be registered and pay before 8 am tomorrow morning.  You can register on the app under programs or by clicking this link.  State Registration on our end opens at 9 am so we will need the hour from 8-9 to verify that youth registered for the program are also active in 4-H Online.  Turkey polts will be given out in June, and then youth will show at the Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair in October and the State fair the week after that.  If you have any questions about this program please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette at sadejarn@ncsu.edu.

4-H Top 4 for the week of February 7, 2022

 

Happy February!  February is here and have you re-enrolled in 4-H Online?  No time to waste because we have lots of exciting programs coming up starting this month for youth and adults alike!

-Friday, February 11 is the deadline to register for Southeast District 4-H Winter Fling. This program is open to our 4-H members ages 13-18.  It will take place in Surf City at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue on Saturday, February 19 from 10 am to 2 pm.  Our teens will meet with teens from 16 other counties in our district to conduct business, complete a community service project, tour the rescue and take part in STEM Workshops. Transportation is provided.  The cost of the workshop is $20, which covers admission, lunch, and supplies.  You can register and pay through our app (under programs) or by clicking this link.  Please note everyone attending will be required to wear masks while traveling and while indoors.  4-H is encouraging surgical masks, KN95, or N95 masks.  The turtle rescue requires KN95 or N95 while at their facility and will provide youth with those masks while there. --February 15 we will be hosting a project record book judging.  Multiple counties will be attending and bringing books.  This is open to adult volunteers and will take place at our office starting at 10 am.  No experience is necessary, we will have staff and volunteers to help you learn the process and what a record book should look like.  To register to be a part of this event please register on our app under programs or by clicking this link.

4-H Top 4 for the Week of January 24, 2022

 

Happy Monday after an incredible snowy weekend.  Hope everyone was able to enjoy the not so often seen white stuff and has had more fun than headaches in the cold weather.  Since it is cold outside this might be a great time to get everyone re-enrolled in 4-H Online.  Volunteers and youth alike.  Please take a few moments to take care of this at 4-H Online.

-Don't forget about our 4-H calendar photo contest.  By the end of the each month, you can submit photos that you have taken, and a blind panel of judges will chose a winner to be place in a year long calendar.  If you submit a winning photo you will receive a calendar with your winning photo in it.   Registration can be found on the app under programs and more information in our top 4 from December.  If you have any questions about this program please contact Wendy Maynor (wrmaynor@ncsu.edu) or Shea Ann DeJarnette (sadejarn@ncsu.edu).

-NC 4-H Volunteer Leaders' Conference originally scheduled for February 4-5 has been cancelled due to the increase in COVID numbers.  Folks who were registered received an email about being part of the virtual business meeting.  We would encourage you to take part in that event.  If you have any questions about this program please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette (sadejarn@ncsu.edu).

-Adult Volunteers we will be holding our annual project record judging at our office on February 15 starting at 10 am.  If you would like to help us judge or learn how to judge project records please contact Wendy Maynor at wrmaynor@ncsu.edu to register by February 11.  We have five counties that will be coming with record books for judging that day.

-For our teens (13-18) District Winter Fling will be taking place on Saturday, February 19.  It will happen at Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue in Pender County.  The event will be held from 10am-2pm.  Transportation will be provided.  Please register and pay ($20 fee for the program) on the app under programs.  Please note you must have an active profile in 4-H online to take part in this and all 4-H events.

4-H Top 4 for the week of December 27, 2021

   

Hope everyone is enjoying their holidays.  I couldn't resist throwing in one last 4-H Top 4 for 2021.  It has been a fast year and we are looking forward to 2022.  Please give us a call if you have any questions.  Just an FYI 4-H Online is down for reporting and will come back up on January 7 for re-enrollment.  We will keep you up to date on this process.

-NEW!  Calendar Photo Contest.  We know you love to take photos.  We want to see what you've got and highlight it.  This year we are going to do something new.  On the first of each month send us your best photo from the previous month (you have to take the photo) and we will submit it to a blind panel of judges to chose the best photo of the month.  The photo will then be used in our 2023 photo calendar and each photographer will get a free copy of the calendar as a prize.   

• This contest is open to all Robeson County 4-H members and volunteers.
• You can submit more than one entry per month-just realize you are competing with yourself. 
• You may submit every month regardless if you have won a previous month.
• Entries will be due, via a google form upload, by the first of each month.  For example December photos will be due January 1.  January photos will be due February 1 etc.

-NEW SPIN CLUB ALERT!  We have a new SPIN Club starting January 5.  They will meet at our office January 5, 10, and 12 from 6-8 pm.  The Getting it Together 4-H SPIN Club will focus on project record books and portfolios.  This is a great time to come in and work on the ones from 2021 or start fresh on one from 2022.  We have two expert volunteers leading the club,  Marilyn Merritt and Aggie Rogers.  Both are skilled at project records and portfolios.  If you have one started or need to just learn what to do this club is for you.  You can turn in up to three project records per year and a portfolio is a combination of three years work in one project area.  Did you know for each completed book you turn in you have the opportunity to win money?  This is a great way to work on your writing skills, see all you have done in a year and just have the chance to start the 4-H year off right.  Registration can be found on our app under programs as well as right here by clicking this link.  We can't wait to see you January 5!

4-H Top 4 for the week of December 13, 2021

 Wow!  This is our next to last top 4 for this year.  We can hardly believe it.  We do have somethings coming up we want to make you aware of....including our office schedule for the holidays.  So please read carefully.

-Thanks to all who came out this past Friday night for our sit-in movie 4-H Appreciation Night.  We hate that we couldn't have it outside due to Mother Nature but we are working on something fun next year, weather permitting.  If you didn't get to come out Friday night your certificate and gift are at the office.  If you would like to come by today thru Thursday to pick up these items we will have them ready.  If you can't make it that's fine we will mail certificates.  Please know thanks to the increase in postage we can not mail gifts.  Our staff will be attending a staff development opportunity on Friday so we will ask that you pick up prior to Friday.

-Our office will be closed Monday December 20-Monday December 27.  We will be back in on Tuesday-Thursday and closed on New Year's Eve for the New Year Holiday.  So if you are interested in purchasing overnight camp or a 4-H Cookbook for a Christmas gift you will need to plan accordingly.

4-H Top 4 for the week of December 6, 2021

   

Good morning everyone!  Hope you had a great weekend.  Our Extension office held our 8th Annual Very Local Holiday Festival at the Robeson County Farmers Market this weekend.  As part of that 4-H (with the help of our Master Gardener Volunteers/4-H Volunteers) gave out 100 S'mores kits advertising our Overnight Summer Camp.   In other words....if you would like to give the gift of a week of overnight camp to a child this Christmas, now is the best time to do it.  

    Speaking of Christmas Presents, our 4-H Cookbooks are available at our office.  They are $10 each.  The money from the cookbooks goes toward the Robert Wilkes 4-H Endowment.  When it is fully endowed it will offer scholarships for Robeson County 4-H entrepreneurial and leadership programs.     

  The year is winding down fast so let's get on with our top 4!

-The deadline to register for 4-H Appreciation Night is today! Just click on the link or you can register from the app, under programs.  Our 4-H Appreciation night this year will be set up as a drive in movie!  When you find your parking spot, send a representative in the lobby and we will have a bag for your car.  In the bag will be awards, and necessities for the movies such as popcorn, popcorn cups, drinks, etc.  We will also have photo opportunities and we heard there just might be snow.....you will have to be here to see it!  After 4-H Appreciation on the big screen we will be showing two classic movies, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman.  So come in your comfy clothes and plan to enjoy the night.  For more information, check out our blog post.

-4-H Adult Volunteers the deadline to register and pay for NC 4-H Leaders Conference, which will take place in Durham, is January 6.  You can register and pay online through our app, under programs.  To learn more about the event click this link to read more about the event on our blog.  There is also a link to registration from that blog post.  This is a great way for our adult volunteers to network with other volunteers from around the state and to get all your training for the year in at one time.  This year because of the schedule you can just drive up early Saturday morning if you want and drive back when the conference is over at 5 pm.

-January 18 is the deadline to turn in 4-H Project Records, Portfolios, Honor Club Applications, and Scholarship forms.  That is a lot right?  

        Project Records/Portfolios:  Project Records for work done in 2021 should be dropped off at our office prior to 5 pm that day.  For youth who took part in animal science, just update your books and drop them off at our office.  Just for turning in a project record or portfolio (which is for 13 year olds and up-showing three consecutive years of work in a project area) you will get a cash award and if you place first or second in your age division in that category, you will move forward to District Competition.  To find the forms you need to complete these just click this link.  Make sure to download the appropriate form for your 4-H Age on January 1, 2021.  

    Honor Club-4-H Honor club is for 4-H members who are 4-H age 16 and have been in 4-H for at least three years.  You have an opportunity to list the things you have done in 4-H and apply to be part of the strongest and longest serving alumni 4-H programs in the Nation.  Less than 1% of those who apply get in.  Being a part of honor club means you are part of a 4-H service organization for life (IF selected Robeson County 4-H will pay your one time, lifetime dues amount).  It is a great networking opportunity and a great way to stay connected to 4-H when you age out of the program.  You can find the application here to download and fill out.  You will need to scroll about halfway down the page to find it.

   Scholarships-For college seniors who want a little bit of financial assistance you should apply for one or more of the college scholarships.  All it takes is one form and you can apply for as many of the 67 scholarships that are available, that you qualify for.  Please read the descriptions of scholarships carefully before checking off which scholarships you want to apply for.  Some are school specific, some two year vs. four year, some are specific to your district, county etc.  Also be prepared to have the following information to include in your packet:   

                a. NC 4-H Scholarship Application Form 

                b. Official High School Transcript 

               c. Scholastic aptitude test scores (SAT or ACT) 

               d. Letter of recommendation (1 academic and 1 4 -H achievement) 

                e. Applicant’s current resume – two-page resume – 4-H’ers choice on style 

                f. Essay (required for NC 4-H Horse Program scholarships) 

                g. Financial need statement (optional, confidential)

-February 15 we will be holding our annual county record book judging at our office starting at 10 am.  Any volunteers willing to come help out with judging, we would love to have you.  If you haven't done it before this is a good time to learn.  We will have experts on hand to help teach you what to look for.  We will have a sign up available later this month.
