United Way Day of Caring

Lumber River United Way’s annual Day of Caring is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2025. Lumber River United Way Day of Caring is an annual day of service on the Friday of Mother’s Day weekend. United Way invites organizations across Bladen, Hoke, and Robeson to come together to complete various projects that benefit the community. This is our most significant corporate volunteer event, with over 335 volunteers completing over 986 hours of volunteer service. Are you looking for a meaningful team bonding or building experience? Want to give back to the community?

A complete list of projects can be found at https://www.lumberriveruw.org/day-caring and on a first-registered, first-served basis for signing up. Individuals and businesses unable to volunteer for more significant projects may consider stopping by Lumberton Chevrolet Buick GMC Hummer, Bladen, or Hoke County Extension offices to sew pillowcases for patients, homeless students, and seniors for a 15-minute volunteer project!

*Also, we are collecting Travel duffel bags for the DSS foster children program.

Contact our Day of Caring liaison, Tomeika Munn or Pamela Wright, to learn more about incorporating Day of Caring into your organization’s community involvement plan.

A Call to Action from United Way

Call to Action from LRUW Board President Gary Locklear

Dear United Way supporter,

We are excited to share the incredible impact that the generosity of community members like you has made over the past year. This support has been instrumental in supporting fifteen partner agency programs, providing essential care to the uninsured, victims of domestic violence, and educational scholarships for children.

None of this would have been possible without our community's collective support and involvement with Lumber River United Way. We have made a significant impact together, and you are a vital part of this collective effort.

Consider the depth of your impact over the last year:

·        Thanks to your steadfast support, 20,460 meals were served to unhoused or those in need.

·        Due entirely to your generosity, 385 families were assisted with hotel and clothing vouchers after a home fire.

·        Your contribution has also enabled Lumber River United Way to provide shoes, winter coats, and basic needs to the over 400 homeless students in our service area.

Visit LRUW's website to learn more about all fifteen partner agencies receiving funding and to view a list of United Way programs, such as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and On The Spot feminine hygiene pads.

As we embark on Lumber River United Way’s 2024 Campaign, I invite you to join the over 5,000 annual donors, small businesses, manufacturing facilities, and foundations in making a difference in Bladen, Dillon, Hoke, and Robeson Counties. Your continued support is crucial in our mission to serve our community.

Again, thank you for your steadfast support of Lumber River United Way; we could not accomplish our goals without you.

Gary Locklear

Board President

A gift of just $20 enrolls one child to receive a book every month for one year!

ASSIST HOMELESS STUDENTS!

Lumber River United Way established a McKinney-Vento Fund in Bladen and Robeson Counties to serve homeless students with basic needs such as winter coats, shoes, mattresses, and food. In some cases, funding will be utilized for homeless students to attend field trips or participate in school sports or clubs where they may otherwise not have the financial resources to do so.

During the 2022-23 school year, 133 students were identified as homeless in Bladen County Schools, currently, there are 71 students identified.

PROVIDE FEMININE
HYGEINE KITS!
When students miss school, every month, due to normal bodily functions, they are not only at risk of failing and dropping out, but also they miss breakfast and lunch.  When adults experience period poverty, they risk losing not just wages but also their jobs.

Join United Way in the fight to end period poverty in Bladen, Dillon, Hoke, and Robeson Counties.
