State Officer Candidates-New Information for Campaigning During COVID

  

 For those 4-H members wanting to run for the State 4-H Council (State Officer Positions)  please see the following information.  

  The state 4-H Council's mission is to share the diverse opportunities 4-H offers to help youth develop social responsibility, empower them to live an authentic life, and grow leaders who can make the best better, regardless of circumstances. Whether planning events, leading community service activities, serving as ambassadors for our organization, or creating a safe and welcoming environment for all,  the council members lead by example for the over 262,000 North Carolina 4-H youth members, thousands of adult volunteers, hundreds of 4-H professionals, and countless others who support 4-H.

AIRE

 

AIRE looks like we are about to talk about astrological signs.  Actually in the world of 4-H stars AIRE stands for Application, Interview, Resume, and now instead of essay Electronic Video.  This is a state 4-H program that is the precursor to going on trips such as National 4-H Congress, National 4-H Conference, and International Leadership Conference.  Youth competitively compete utilizing all four components of the process and those with the highest scores in the end win the opportunity to attend one of these great opportunities.  To take part in the program and vie for a trip youth must be between 14-18 years of age and be a 4-H member.

  This year we are proud to say that 4-H Member Maggie Underwood, County Council reporter and member of the Dirty Rascals JMG 4-H Club and Dirty Dozen Shooting Sports 4-H Club submitted her application, a resume, completed her electronic video and just this week went through the interview process.  We hope to hear how she did during our virtual 4-H Congress Experience this year.

NC Citizenship Focus

This afternoon was our first day of 4-H Citizenship Focus.  What are we focused on you might ask?  That is a good question.  Today we explored our youth voices.  Our youth learned that they have a voice and are able, in this day in age, to communicate important thoughts and issues for their age group, their communities, and help bring light and change to the world around them. 

  First let me back up and tell you about this 4-H opportunity.  Usually we gather in Raleigh to learn about government and youth roles within government.  Our youth meet with lawmakers and have the opportunity to see how things work.  Thanks to COVID this 4-H program is taking a virtual spin.  A spin that allows are youth to have an even more personal experience.   

  This year Brooke Canady and Maggie Love were gracious enough to take part in this first ever virtual Citizenship event.  Today they had the chance to meet other 4-H youth and learned about telling their story.  They had the opportunity to create a hashtag for something they wanted to share a message about. 

   They took those messages and found a way to express them in 240 characters or in a photo for social media platforms such as Twitter.  Then they expanded upon that to an elevator speech or a longer post such as a blog or even Facebook. 

   Our youth created the hashtags #farmerstrong and #bethevoice.  The message behind #farmerstrong has to do with people's lack ofknowledge andappreciation for farmer's and what they do.  After all we would be naked and hungry without them.  #bethevoice is an inspirational message for generation Z of standing tall, standing together, and making a difference through coming together rather than splitting apart.  Both had very strong and important messages we should be listening to.

Virtual Horse Compeititions

Congratulations to NC 4-H'ers that competed in the Texas A & M Virtual Horse Judging Contest! NC had 4 individuals in the top 20 out of 282 individuals that completed the contest. NC 4-H had the top team out of 55 complete teams. High overall individual went to NC 4-Her Abby Holsomback from Granville County! The members of the top team were: Savannah Lindsey from Cumberland County, and Madison Rosenbaum, Raegan Shepherd, and EmmaRose Church from Johnston County.  

NC 4-H Ambassador Program

If you are an active 4-H member (currently enrolled in 4-H Online) and would like to up your game, think about taking part in the NC 4-H Ambassador Program.  This program allows you to serve as a positive youth role model for other 4-H members.  You will go through a series of trainings, submit portfolios, and complete projects to obtain your certification.  There are four levels.  This is open to all 4-H members 13 and up who have been a member for at least two consecutive years.  For the first time ever trainings will be offered online so that you can receive your certification.

Turkey Time

  For those of you who think its a little early to talk about Thanksgiving you are correct.  This is however a great time to start raising turkey's to be shown at the NC State Fair.  That's why there was a trip to Raleigh to pick up polts for our three 4-H members, Jackson and Addie Shooter, and Lee Pate who will be raising these birds to show at the state fair.  Before that there will be a practice run at the Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair.  So plan now to stop by and see the turkey show and our 4-H members in action.  By the time October comes these little polts will be more than 20 pounds.  Definitely worth coming out to see.
