2022 Hippology Contest Results
The 2022 NC 4-H Hippology Contest was held on March 12 at NC State University. Twelve Senior Rookies and 50 Junior Rookies competed in the Hippology event for the first time! In the senior division, there were 67 contestants and 13 teams. The junior division featured 49 contestants and 10 teams. Six Cloverbud contestants also navigated stations and placed two classes: Quarter Horse halter and Hunter Under Saddle.

Chatham county won the senior team title. Team members were Samantha Durham, Kyra Worth, Sara Richardson and Victoria Smith. The Chatham team was coached by Mary Dickerson and Ruth Vorder Bruegge. The Rutherford county junior team, coached by Cindy Dotson, took top honors. Champion junior team members were Emma Horton, Gregory Tice, Cora Elliot, and Riley Soper.

In addition, the Horseman of the Year for both divisions hailed from Gaston county. Lauren Williams captured the senior title and Lauren Hedrick won the junior award. Both 4-H’ers were coached by BJ Waelz.

 
2022 Horsebowl Contest Results
The 2022 NC State 4-H Horsebowl contest was held on March 12 at North Carolina State University. A total of thirty-three teams from across the state competed in the double-elimination event.

The junior division champions were Rutherford county, coached by Cindy Dotson. High individual honors went to Chloe Oaks from Avery county.

Cabarrus county’s mixed team, coached by Kristen Kaus, captured first place. Sori Suthers from Currituck county was named the high individual in the division.

The champion senior team hailed from Wake county and was coached by Beth Morgan. Chatham county 4-H’er Kyra Worth earned the high-scoring senior individual award.
 
2022 Horse Judging Contest
The 2022 NC State 4-H Horse Judging Contest registration form and details are now live on the website! Entries close on March 29, so enter soon!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on April 9 in Williamston at Martin Community College.

We will be holding an awards ceremony for the contest immediately following the conclusion of reasons, and the contest official cuts and placings!

 
State 4-H Horse Show 2022 | July 6th - 10th
The NC 4-H State Horse Show will be held July 6-10, 2022, at the James B. Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh. NEW for 2022 is an exhibitor sponsorship incentive! 4-H’ers that submit completed and paid sponsorships with their State Show Entry form will receive 20% of the sponsorship fees collected off of their total show bill. For example, if a 4-H’er turns in $1000 in sponsorships with their entry form, they can deduct $200 off their show fees owed.

Qualifying Horse Shows & Eligibility Cards
The show packets (entry forms) for all 4 Qualifying Horse Shows are now posted on the website. Deadlines vary by show, so be sure to check the site and read through the packet for the show you plan to attend. Also, the link to the eligibility card request form is linked at the bottom of the same page.

Rule Clarification: Little Britches
For this year, exhibitors in the Little Britches division may show using a snaffle bit and two hands on split reins regardless of the age of the horse. The Executive Committee representatives from the 4-H Horse Program Advisory Committee have voted to permit this for the 2022 show season following a rule clarification question.

Show Date Clarification: West
The West Qualifying Show is April 30, 2022. There was one place on the eligibility card request form where May 1 was listed as the date.

 
2022 State Horse Show Sponsorship Opportunities
Horse Show sponsorships span a wide variety of levels. Division, Reserve Champion, and Major Show Sponsors include their choice of an advertisement in the show program or indoor vendor space. If you are interested in being a Sponsor, please check out our attached letter and packet.

 
Stewards Needed
The NC 4-H Horse Program is in need of new Stewards and Pony Measurers! Adult volunteer leaders can find more information about the role of the stewards on the NC 4-H Horse Program Stewards page.

Stewards must be registered NC 4-H Horse Program volunteers for at least 3 years and submit a letter of recommendation from their county agent. They must attend one of the below virtual trainings:

  • March 28th, 7:30pm
  • April 12th, 8pm

If you are interested in attending the training, please fill out the form on the Stewards page. 
If you are a current steward, no additional training is required of you at this time.
Southern Regionals 2022 | August 3rd - 7th
Attention to those aspiring to attend the 2022 Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships: We have just received confirmation that Southern Regionals will be held a week LATER than usual this year, dates 8/3-8/7.
Southern Regional entry forms will be available in State Show Exhibitor packets. The entry deadline for Southern Regional entries is July 10 at noon. .  Youth who are active 4-H members and do not qualify at the State 4-H Horse Show are still eligible to apply to attend the regional show.  The application must be completed and submitted during the State Show. If the full allotment of 70 NC qualified horses is not met, they will be eligible for consideration. One qualifying position is reserved for a 4-H’er exhibiting in roping classes.  The executive committee shall select a 4-H’er based upon participation in 4-H Horse Program activities, performance at roping events and or participation and performance in Ranch Horse classes at the State 4-H Horse Show.  Exhibitors wishing to be considered as a Roping representative must submit a letter requesting consideration to the Southern Regional entry box, prior to 12:00 noon on July 10, 2022 of the State 4-H Horse Show.

 
2022 Horsemanship Camp | June 12-17 @ Millstone
Bring your equine partner to camp!  A signature Millstone camp for over 45 years, Horsemanship Camp will improve your horsemanship skills while having fun with other campers.  

All breeds and disciplines welcome!  Classes are divided by skill level and riding style. For campers aged 8 - 18. Campers will have the opportunity to:
  • Have riding lessons on their own horse twice daily, taught by qualified staff
  • Participate in and watch training demonstrations from professionals
  • Play games on horseback
  • Learn new and better horsemanship skills and techniques
  • Participate in trail rides
  • Practice new skills, such as horse judging, equine first aid, and much more!

Campers must provide their own horse, tack, equipment, and feed.

 
NCSU Livestock Camp
The NC State Livestock Science Camp is a summer camp experience for youth 15-18 years old. It is designed to expand high school students' knowledge of the livestock and agricultural industries and related careers. No previous livestock species experience necessary!

The 2022 Livestock Science Camp is returning to residential programming June 12-17, 2022! Spaces are limited, and applications are due soon.

Intro To Western Dressage | May 22nd
Date: May 22, 2022, Start Time: 9:30 AM
Location: Union County Saddle Club
Cost: $100/rider, $25/audit

Have you been hearing about Western Dressage? Wondering what all the excitement is all about? Join us for a day of Western Dressage to learn the basics you need to know to help get you started in the arena! All breeds and styles of riding are welcome!

We will start by developing an understanding the goals and biomechanics of Western Dressage. Review of showing procedures, gaits, tack and attire, basic rules, and strategies for learning a test. You will learn about the different organizations and many ways to show.

Then we will move to working in the saddle by practicing some of the gaits, transitions and elements needed to ride a Western Dressage test well. We will top off our day by having each person practice riding a current test. (WDDA 2022 - Introductory Test 2)

9:30 AM start time—introductory section on foot.

11:00 AM – Begin riding some exercises
Lunch (please bring your own)

Shannon St. Clair Hoffman has over 20 years, experience Judging Open Shows in several states. She is certified in all four categories for the NCSU Open Horse Shows Judges' Certification Clinic list. She regularly judges Hunter and Open Shows, including Ranch and Gaited classes in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. In the past she has successfully competed at the AQHA Congress, Dressage at Devon and the Western Dressage World Show, along with multiple Trail and Ranch events.

Her mule, Queen of the Savanna was Open Western Dressage Introductory Division NCDCTA Horse of the Year Reserve Champion in 2020 and NCDCTA Horse of the Year Champion in 2021.  
Shannon taught at the Millstone 4-H Horsemanship Camp for several years and owns, St. Clair Equine, a business that offers training and lessons to kids and adults at all stages of working with their horses, mules, and donkeys. Shannon is available for private lessons at your farm.

West District 3-Day Horsemanship Camp
Date: June 20 - June 22, 2022
This horsemanship clinic is designed for youth to increase their horsemanship knowledge and riding skills. Each child brings his/her horse and throughout the three-day clinic, participants will receive instruction in riding classes by selected disciplines. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced rider, this clinic has something to offer you!
