    North Carolina 4-H is planning to host a FREE virtual volunteer training this Fall and we want to know what training topics you would like to see offered during this 1/2 day training opportunity.

Regional Chicken Project

Robeson County 4-H would like to recognize two 4-H members for their participation and hard work in this year’s Regional Chicken Project Competition.  Maggie Love of Rowland and Jase Chavis of Maxton both took part in the project, which involved raising chickens since February and showing them at a show on the campus of Bladen Community College on April 22.  Jase is a Cloverbud and received a participation medal for his efforts in the showing and for his record book.  Maggie is a senior and placed fifth in her age division (14– to 18-year-olds) showing, and received first place for her record book.

    The Regional Chicken Project is an opportunity for youth in Future Farmers of America and 4-H in the Southeastern Region to learn more about raising poultry.  Youth from more than eight counties in North Carolina in the Southeast and Central Regions took part in this project.  It was open to youth registered in FFA and 4-H programs in those counties.  The youth purchased a hen or a broiler chick at a discounted rate and raised them for almost two months before showing them. They also had to take part in three virtual trainings and complete a record book.  The Project Record Book is for youth to record their knowledge gained and their care of the animals over the course of this project.  The record books were judged prior to the show based on age of the participants.  Cloverbuds (5– to 7-year-olds) receive participation awards for their efforts; however Juniors (8– to 10-year-olds), Intermediates (11– to 13-year-olds), and Seniors (14– to 18-year-olds) are judged competitively.  After the show, youth raising meat chickens or broilers were given the opportunity to donate their birds to be processed and donated to local food pantries.  Youth with laying hens have the opportunity to keep their birds to start an egg business or sell their birds for a profit.

LUMBER RIVER UNITED WAY PARTNERS WITH JERSEY MIKE'S SUBS

Jersey Mike’s Subs, known for its fresh sliced/fresh grilled subs, will open today at 3000 N. Elm St., in Lumberton on April 28. 

Franchise owner Daniel Terracciano will hold a grand opening and fundraiser from Wednesday, April 28 to Sunday, May 2 to support Lumber River United Way. Customers with a special fundraising coupon may make a minimum $2 contribution to Lumber River United Way in exchange for a regular sub. Customers must have a coupon to be eligible.

“We are excited to be partnering with Lumber River United Way for this grand opening and look forward to raising funds for this great cause,” said Terracciano. “We are proud to be a part of the Jersey Mike’s family and are honored to serve and support the Lumberton community.” If you haven’t donated to this charity before, now is an excellent time to consider doing so!

Based on guidance from the CDC and public health authorities, to start, Jersey Mike’s dining room will be open at a reduced capacity with socially distant tables inside. 

Guests can place takeout orders in-store or for pickup through the website or through the Jersey Mike’s app. Additionally, delivery is available in most areas through the Jersey Mike’s app or through third-party delivery partners. Curbside pickup is available for orders placed in Jersey Mike’s app.

The health and well-being of Jersey Mike’s guests and operators are its highest priorities, and locations continue to prepare, serve and package Jersey Mike’s subs with all the precautionary measures in place to protect its customers and its teams.

A Message Concerning the 4-H Japanese Exchange Program

We regret to announce that our Japanese partners have canceled the month-long Summer Inbound Program as of April 16th. They have felt compelled to make this decision due to reasons arising out of the Covid 19 situation which they list as follows:

 

  1. The Japanese government has set travel restrictions to Level 3 which prohibits all nonessential travel. It’s believed that the delay in vaccinations in Japan and the increase in the virus variants will mean that these restrictions will likely continue through this summer.
  2.  JTB (Japan Travel Bureau), the largest travel agency in Japan, which our Japanese partners depend upon for air travel arrangements, is not arranging any group travel in April, May or June and it’s believed that this will be extended into July and August.
  3. The cancellation of the Inbound program is based on escalating travel restrictions implemented by the Japanese government which doesn’t make it feasible to secure group travel to the USA this summer. The Japanese organizations do not expect these restrictions improving.
