JMG News

Hello Junior Master Gardener Subscribers,

Occasionally, our JMG program identifies research journal articles capturing many of the core reasons individuals enjoy and benefit from gardening and working with plants. Please find the linked journal article, below, co-authored by Dr. Charlie Hall, Ellison Chair in International Floriculture at Texas A&M University, discussing the emotional and mental health benefits of plants.

We hope this article will provide you with more knowledge as to why plants are important to our well-being and supplies you with more encouragement to enjoy activities and hobbies centered around plants and gardening!

Want to have some pre fun at the Fair?

We have a large area that 4-H, EFNEP, and FCS are joining together to decorate at the fair on Thursday.  If you would like to help come on out to the fairgrounds Thursday, September 27 between 1 and 6 pm to help us fill the booth and tell folks about our incredible Extension Programs we would love to see you.  We will be in the main building (where the vendors set up) and we will have all sorts of things to get done.  Come on out and have some fun as we make this an interactive booth with a good time and a great healthy message.

  Hope to see you there!

Miss Artastic? Don't Worry!

4-H Members, families, Volunteers...are you the crafty type?  Do you maybe knit? Bake? Have  green thumb?  Well think about entering your items in the Robeson Regional Agricultural fair.  Not only will you have the chance to have your hard work viewed by thousands you might also win premium money and ribbons.  Imagine being able to say you grew a blue ribbon fern, or your bush produces award winning pomegranates. How many folks can say that?

Entering items is easier than ever.  Drop off times at the Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair are from Sunday, September 24, 1-6 pm; Monday-Wednesday from 4-8 pm.  This year they have something new, to help you stay out of the lines.  You can register your items online before you get there with their new fair entry system.  One of the benefits to that is if your family has a 4-H Online account you should be able to sign in with your 4-H Online email and password.  If you prefer not to do that you can create your own account with fair entry.

Just follow the prompts and don't worry about "creating" invoice, there is no charge for entering your items.  Just keep hitting the continue button until you get to submit.  Take your items to the fair during one of the drop off times and let a volunteer who is registering know that you registered online and give them your name.  They will check you in and print your tags for you.  It really is that easy.

To enter items into the fair just go to:  https://fairentry.com/Fair/SignIn/19121

Registering for the Fair-Animal Shows

Showmanship Circuit families:

I am very excited to say that our Fair Entry Registration system for the 2023 Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair is up and running this morning.  That being said, this is a new system and may have a couple of bugs, so we are asking for folks' patience and constructive feedback as they register.
The link to register is
https://fairentry.com/Fair/SignIn/19121
The following counties have accepted our request for 4-H Online integration: Columbus, Cumberland, Lee, Randolph, and Robeson.  What that means is that you should be able to sign in with your 4-H Online email and password to register in the Fair Entry System.  If you prefer not to do that, or your county has not accepted the request, you can create your own account with fair entry.  I realize some of you already have an account from registering for the Lee County Show so you should be familiar with it, and can register with the same account you used for them.
When you are registering as an exhibitor please note you will find the shows under the specific animal types, not listed under youth.  Please register for both showmanship and market shows for goats, lambs, and heifers/steers.  We will not be having a market hog show this year.
One other note...we will not require health certificates this year at the Robeson fair.  A vet tech with NCDA has agreed to be on hand for our livestock shows and will check animals on site.  This was something we were able to secure in the last week.
We appreciate everyone's patience as we work with the fair to make this an easier process for all of you and we hope that the new registration process is common sense and easy.  We think you will also see a change in running the shows, as this should make it easier as well.
If you have any questions please reach out to Shea Ann DeJarnette at sadejarn@ncsu.edu or (910) 671-3276.
We look forward to seeing you at the fair.
Shea Ann

This 4-H summer day camp program was held for 8 weeks. Each week there was a theme: seeds, soil, fertilizing, weeding, pruning, and composting. The participants rotated to 3 stations that included doing activities in the greenhouse, out in the demo garden, and a craft station. The last two weeks they focused on Cooking with Perennials. One week they learned to make Cassava Hash Browns, Lau Pele Rice Wraps, and Lau Pele Balls. The last week focused on cooking with annuals, so they made green papaya salad, green bean salad, and regular salad with items from the demo garden. The kids enjoyed all the activities and had a blast learning about gardening!!

Saying Goodbye

It is with a sad heart that we share the news of one of our own volunteers who has passed away.  Peggy Monk was a 4-H Volunteer in Bladen and Robeson Counties for almost two decades.  Peggy started her 4-H Club after starting to homeschool her children.  Her home school grew and she was looking for other outlets for socialization and learning for her children when she started her 4-H Club.  She was active in all aspects of 4-H and was recognized on the district and state levels for her volunteer work with the clubs.  She served as an officer for our leaders association and was always willing to help out.   Peggy was also the assistant club leader for our Dirty Dozen shooting sports club and loved leading the Citizenship section of any program.

One of my favorite memories of Peggy was when she was trying to offer incentives to her home school students to pass their end of grade test.  She told them if they all scored above a certain percentage she would die her hair and let them choose the color.  It was no surprise the next time we saw her that her hair had gone from it's traditional white to a electric blue.  The only problem was the dye that was chosen was a permanent dye so it was months before it grew out enough to go back to her original color.  She took it all with stride and pride, being able to brag on her students and how well they had done on their tests.

Peggy was kind, sweet, and had a wicked sense of humor.  What I will remember about Peggy most of all is her passion for her children.  She demonstrated daily, the lengths she would go to for them and prayed they would grow to be happy and capable adults.  She was a woman who loved deeply and fought hard for the right things.  We will miss her smile, her laugh, and her heart in our program and lives.  Thank you Peggy for all that you gave, and your heart of service.

You can view information about services for Peggy at https://www.majesticfh.com/obituary/MrsPeggyS-Monk.  We ask that you keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Just an update...a visitation is planned for Sunday, September 17 from 5-7 pm at Majestic funeral home.

Fall Into New at the Fair

This article was written for the Robesonian by our own Shea Ann DeJarnette, Extension 4-H Agent.

I can almost smell the popcorn, hot oil for the funnel cakes, and ribs slow cooking on the cooker as the Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair gets ready to open September 29. You can expect some of your old favorites like great food, incredible rides, and animals that will make you smile. We also have a lot of new things going on this year, and you won’t want to miss out. Here are a few new things you can experience as part of this year’s fair.

One of the things you will see prior to the fair opening is our new Fair Entry system. This is an online system that will make entering home exhibits and animal entries easier than ever. Folks who submit entries will be able to go online and pre-register their items if they wish. If not, bring your items in and we will register the way we have before, it will just be done on a tablet this year instead of paper. Our tags will have bar codes that will make it easier for our judges to tag winners, and it will make work easier for our fair volunteers. It doesn’t cost anything to enter your home exhibits (crafts, crops, baked goods, flowers, etc.) in the fair, and you might just be a blue-ribbon winner. Home-exhibit take in will take place Sunday, September 24, from 1-6 p.m. and Monday-Wednesday, September 25-27, from 4-8 p.m. Bring your items out and see if you will be a blue-ribbon winner.

Some of the new you will experience will be on the grounds as soon as you turn in. We have a new electronic sign highlighting our events, sponsors, and all the great things going on at the fair. Also, we have new ticket booths for our online pass, mega passes, and complimentary pass holders so you won’t have to wait in the long lines to get in. This year we will also have the opportunity to redeem your mega passes prior to coming to the fair, so all you would need to do come fair time is walk in the gate.

Another new feature: we will be able to accept credit and debit cards. We are happy to be partnering with Truist to make this convenience happen for our fair patrons and make it easier to get in the gate. Of course, if you prefer to use cash we will still be taking that and have an ATM at the gate for your convenience.

Every year we have new entertainment, and this year is no different. Come check out the Doc Magic comedy show and Ember Fire, the Fire Dancer. Of course we will have some of your favorites returning. Alan Sands will be on the McDonald’s Stage, and Johnny Rockett’s Cycle Circus will be wowing crowds with their death-defying motorcycle act. We have some incredible singers and entertainment lined up nightly in the McKenzie Supply Company tent. All of this for just $10 gate admission, and if you love the rides you can get an unlimited ride band for $25 Monday-Thursday, and $30 on Friday and Saturday. Think about all the “new” you will want to check out for this bargain price. See it all  September 29-October 7. You won’t want to miss it because, “We Have It All!”.

Well folks Summer is officially over and we are excited to jump back into regular 4-H Fall activities.  At this point everyone is back in school and we hope you are already having a great year!

Please note, we have a lot of new folks in 4-H after our wonderful summer program and we would like to welcome them to the Top 4.  This is our version of a weekly newsletter with information about upcoming programs.  You can register from the links posted here or if you need to check on schedules, feel free to register from our 4-H AppIt is a free download from your app store.  Just search for 4-H Now!.  Download it, and when you open it you should be able to find Robeson County 4-H.  On our app we have our blog (which is an electronic newsletter), our current programs listed under programs where you can register for upcoming events, a calendar of annual events, and more.  It is a great resource and makes program registration easy.

With that being said on to the top 4!

Planning for those programs needs to start as they are in the 9-13 age range. Do you know how to move them forward and how to help them focus on different areas to help them be successful in the areas of ARI, Scholarships, and Honor Club to just name a few? Check out this training to see how you can help shape the future for our 4-H Teen Leaders and different programs they can take part in. This is a hybrid training.  In person training will be held at the Bladen County Center, 450 Smith Cir, Elizabethtown, NC 28337.  The virtual training will be helf via Zoom.  To register for both please go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/7-county-master-volunteer-revolution-tickets-554441678987?aff=oddtdtcreator
