2021 4-H Inbound Exchange

This information was made available through the NC 4-H website and is available from:  https://nc4h.ces.ncsu.edu/2021/03/exciting-international-4-h-opportunity-hosting-a-japanese-delegate-in-2021/

The 2021NC 4-H Inbound Exchange this coming summer is set to take place July 24th – August 18th! The information below highlights some of the programs, but more information can be found here: 2021 NC 4-H International Exchange Programs.

  • The Inbound program will look a bit different for 2021: we will be hosting 10 delegates from Japan with 1 chaperone. Our regular capacity is 12 delegates and 2 chaperones here in NC.
  • The States’ 4-H program and the Japanese programs have decided they will not be sending delegates younger than 13; however, they have allowed an age difference of 4 years for host siblings (with proper discussion with host families taking place before placement).
  • There will be COVID-19 Health Guidelines outlined with host families and Japanese delegates ahead of the exchange.
  • Pickup and dropoff points may be different than usual but will be outlined in Host Family Orientations.
  • Requirements for testing and vaccination encouragement will also be covered in Host Family Orientations.
  • Host Family Requirements: complete application, meet local 4-H agent/staff, register in 4-H Online (if not already), pass background checks, pass in-home visit (virtual), attend Host Family and Host Sibling Orientations, and maintain communication with state coordinator and chaperone.
There have already been inquiries throughout the state about hosting this summer, so we know there is some interest in this program. However, there is still a chance that the program may be suspended due to changing conditions throughout each country. Have questions concerning this opportunity? Contact Daniel Collins (dpcollin@ncsu.edu) or Dr. Shannon McCollum (shannon_mccollum@ncsu.edu).

Calling our Citizen Science Volunteers!

NC 4-H and Citizen Science. It's Connected
Branching into Being the Scientist 4-H Volunteer Registration
Citizen Science and 4-H. It's Connected

What does a scientist looks like? Normally when we think of a scientist it is someone in a sterile lab with a white lab coat. That could be the image. But what if I said, what is a citizen scientist? What image comes up in your mind? Take a minute to think about that. A citizen scientist is not the professional scientist, but a person who is curious. A citizen scientist comes from all walks of life. Citizen Science allows curious citizens to collaborate with professional researchers on all kinds of topics.   "Community science," "Amateur science," "crowdsourced science," “volunteer monitoring” and "public participation in scientific research" are also common aliases for
citizen science.

How does Citizen Science connect with 4-H? That's easy. Come learn how to add Citizen Science to your normal
4-H programming.  Get your 4-H volunteers and 4-Hers digging deeper in content of interest as we introduce our partnership with SciStarter and the NCSU Citizen Science Campus.

Come Learn with us on Wednesday April 7 starting at 6:00 pm how you can apply citizen science to your local 4-H programs. Deadline to Register Friday April 2,2021

NC State University and N.C. A&T State University work in tandem, along with federal, state and local governments, to form a strategic partnership called N.C. Cooperative Extension.

Extension's 4-H program is the largest youth development organization in North Carolina. We help over 247,000 young people grow into active, contributing citizens each year.

Art Hub 4-H Club

Thomas outside looking
at color, and drawing.
Our newest lineup to the clubs met for the first time last night.  The virtual club has 10 members and is already off to a colorful start.  Meeting virtually the youth had the opportunity to meet each other over padlet prior to the meeting.  During the meeting the learned about primary (red, yellow, and blue) colors and secondary colors (orange, green, purple).  The group played a color scavenger hunt to find items that were either primary or secondary colors.
Jahari's color submission

At the end of the meeting the artists were commissioned to go outside and see color.  Then sketch out what they see in their sketchbooks, or on a piece of paper, and demonstrate the color they see.  The youth are then asked to put a short video of them explaining their art on the club's Flipgrid page or on their padlet.  They have a week to complete the work.

This club will meet weekly for six weeks.  For more information about this club please contact Wendy Maynor, 4-H Program Associate, at wrmaynor@ncsu.edu.

Hybrid Livestock Science Camp

What is NC State’s Hybrid Livestock Science Camp?

The camp program is designed to have students explore the science (nutrition, genetics, physiology, health, engineering etc.) of animal production.  Participants will engage in laboratory activities at home, watch demonstrations/farm tours, and connect with industry leaders. Throughout the week we also explore the high-demand STEM careers related to animal science, there is a whole world beyond veterinary medicine.

What is the format of the camp?

The virtual camp program will involve a camp resource page for exploring various animal industries, live virtual meetings, and at home activities. Live programming will occur from approximately 9am to 3pm Monday-Thursday June 28-July 1st. NC State Animal Science and Agricultural Education students serve as counselors and part of the educational team.  There will potentially be a one-day live animal interaction workshop at the end of the camp program July 2 or 3, 2021 (Covid-19 guideline dependent). This workshop would be an opportunity for participants to learn some basic livestock handling and husbandry skills at the E. Carroll Joyner Beef Educational Unit (multiple species of livestock will be included). (Covid testing, symptom monitoring, and Covid risk acknowledgement may be required prior to participation)

Who should apply?

Any youth ages 15-18 years old who have an interest in animals and science. No prior experience working with livestock animals is required- this is a safe place to explore the animal industries. Applicants should be enthusiastic about exploring opportunities to advance the lives of livestock, discover the science around livestock husbandry, and human-animal interactions.

What do students gain from participating?

Camper reflections demonstrate: 1) growth in the detail and precision of scientific management practices that go into caring for livestock, 2) a deeper appreciation for the production livestock species in which they may not have previously had an opportunity to engage with, 3) creation of memories that will last a lifetime, 4) the opening of doors to new careers, and 5) build a network of friends throughout NC State.

Camp Fees/requirements?

There is no application fee. The virtual camp programming will require participants have access to high-speed internet connections for the 4 full days of camp. The virtual camp will cost $125. The live animal workshop would be an additional $75 fee for selected participants (due at a later time based on Covid-19 guideline updates).

35 scholarships are available for youth from under-represented populations in animal science. Priority will be given to youth from Wake County, Black/Latino/Native American youth, 1st generation college seeking, and/or low-income.

Where can applicants get more information and apply?

Visit https://cals.ncsu.edu/animal-science/extension/livestock-science-camp/ for pictures, stories, and more information. The application is available through this link until April 1st. Scholarships to assist with camp fees will be available to qualified applicants (scholarship application is embedded in the camp application).

NC State, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the Livestock Science Camp are committed to supporting diversity engagement. Diversity is about more than just one element of a person’s identity, like race, gender or ethnicity. It’s about inclusion, equity and celebrating differences — as well as similarities. We strive to make this camp a gateway of inclusion for exploring animal science.
