Hybrid Livestock Science Camp

 

What is NC State’s Hybrid Livestock Science Camp? 

The camp program is designed to have students explore the science (nutrition, genetics, physiology, health, engineering etc.) of animal production.  Participants will engage in laboratory activities at home, watch demonstrations/farm tours, and connect with industry leaders. Throughout the week we also explore the high-demand STEM careers related to animal science, there is a whole world beyond veterinary medicine.

What is the format of the camp? 

The virtual camp program will involve a camp resource page for exploring various animal industries, live virtual meetings, and at home activities. Live programming will occur from approximately 9am to 3pm Monday-Thursday June 28-July 1st. NC State Animal Science and Agricultural Education students serve as counselors and part of the educational team.  There will potentially be a one-day live animal interaction workshop at the end of the camp program July 2 or 3, 2021 (Covid-19 guideline dependent). This workshop would be an opportunity for participants to learn some basic livestock handling and husbandry skills at the E. Carroll Joyner Beef Educational Unit (multiple species of livestock will be included). (Covid testing, symptom monitoring,and Covid risk acknowledgement may be required prior to participation)

Who should apply? 

Any youth ages 15-18 years old who have an interest in animals and science. No prior experience working with livestock animals is required- this is a safe place to explore the animal industries. Applicants should be enthusiastic about exploring opportunities to advance the lives of livestock, discover the science around livestock husbandry, and human-animal interactions.  

What do students gain from participating? 

Camper reflections demonstrate: 1) growth in the detail and precision of scientific management practices that go into caring for livestock, 2) a deeper appreciation for the production livestock species in which they may not have previously had an opportunity to engage with, 3) creation of memories that will last a lifetime, 4) the opening of doors to new careers, and 5) build a network of friends throughout NC State.

Camp Fees/requirements? 

There is no application fee. The virtual camp programming will require participants have access to high-speed internet connections for the 4 full days of camp. The virtual camp will cost $125. The live animal workshop would be an additional $75 fee for selected participants (due at a later time based on Covid-19 guideline updates). 

35 scholarships are available for youth from under-represented populations in animal science. Priority will be given to youth from Wake County, Black/Latino/Native American youth, 1st generation college seeking, and/or low-income.
