Cooking Up Confidence: Science With Your Snacks!

This virtual event, put together by the North Carolina Science Festival & NC State University 4-H program is for families with youth ages 8+.

Orange dust. Melting coconuts. Explosions. Cupcake holders full of soil.

Strange things indeed are happening in Cloverville.

Sink your teeth into STEM by solving a series of food-related mini-mysteries in this family-focused, hands-on virtual event sponsored by North Carolina 4-H.

Participants will experience the 4-H Healthy Habits program by peeking into the science behind food and bonding together as a family. Families will learn about food safety, food chemistry, and where food comes from. In this program, you will follow a mystery to find clues that unlock new challenges.

On April 13th (from 6-8:30 pm), you will meet with the other Snack Science Sleuths online using Zoom to learn how to play the game and solve the first challenge. Over the next week, your family will complete a series of self-paced investigations using everyday household items and materials posted on a super secret event website. Finally, you will help solve the final challenge with your fellow Snack Science Sleuths at a closing celebration over Zoom on April 20th (from 6-8:30 pm).

Registration Information:

Registration is $5.00 per youth. One Snack Science Sleuth kit will be mailed to each family that registers for this event. Each kit will include one copy of Cooking Up Confidence, a 4-H cookbook, and educational supplies to use during our live Zoom meetings.

Snack Science Sleuth Challenges will require some additional materials that can easily be found around your home. A list with more details will be sent the week before the event begins.

IMPORTANT: If you register for this event by Monday, March 22nd, we guarantee that your kits will arrive prior to this event. For registrations placed after this date, it is not guaranteed that your kits will arrive in time for the live event. However, recordings of this event will be available for you to follow along with your kits at your own pace.

If you are registering as a parent or guardian, please submit one registration per child.
