Lumber River United Way

Lumber River United Way has a new Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program called VITA. I have attached the VITA rack cards and posters in English and Spanish. Please share with employees and clients in your community.

VITA provides free tax return filing assistance to people who are low to moderate-income, have disabilities, are elders, or have low English proficiency.  Lumber River United Way is excited to be able to offer this service to our Bladen, Hoke, and Robeson County neighbors. The volunteers preparing returns are trained through VITA programs and certified through the IRS.

How does it work?

First, go to the VITA section of the Lumber River United Way’s website to make your appointment.  https://www.lumberriveruw.org/vita

When you make an appointment, you will receive an email with a confirmation of your appointment and a list of documents you should bring to your appointment.

A few days before your appointment, you will receive a reminder email.  We’ll include the list of documents again so you can make sure everything is in order before you arrive.

During your appointment, we will conduct an intake interview to make sure we know all the credits and deductions, and sources of income that need to be reported.  We will help you sign consent forms for the program, and we’ll help you set up a client portal account with the IRS so you can add documents or check on your return.  Lastly, we will scan your documents so that your preparer will have access to all the information they need to create the best return for you.  You will get to keep all your documents.

After your return is prepared, you will be able to schedule a time to meet, either virtually or in person, to review your return and sign it.  If you consent, we will e-file it for you.  If you would rather have a paper copy so you can mail it, we’ll give you printed copies.  E-filing allows the IRS to process your return within a few weeks.  A mailed return can take months to process.  The IRS is still processing millions of paper returns from last year.

Be a Hunger Hero

This is a great program and many of our 4-H youth have participated in, both at our NC Youth Institute and also the Global Youth Institute at the World Food Prize in Iowa. It is a good fit for youth interested in plant or animal systems agriculture, food and nutrition, agriculture engineering and community organizing. We are offering this as both an in-person program on campus AND virtually on April 1st. I would love to talk to anyone more about this program!

All high school youth are invited to join us for the 2022 North Carolina Youth Institute (NCYI), a program that provides a platform for youth to research and give recommendations to solve key global challenges that range from food insecurity, access to potable water, poverty, human rights, engineering issues, and more.
  • Write a paper: Youth select a country besides their own and research the challenges families face around food and write a paper with proposed community-based solutions.
  • Youth present their paper to their peers at the in-person NCYI at NC State and work collectively to find common themes around global hunger.
  • Participate in hands-on workshops. Youth will have a chance to explore hands-on sessions led by faculty across CALS to learn more about NC agriculture and food systems.
  • Become a Borlaug Scholar. After participating in the NCYI, youth will be named a Borlaug Scholar by the World Food Prize.
The NCYI is hosted by NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and is a part of the the World Food Prize's Global Youth Institute

Youth will need to register and submit their paper by March 4th, 2022 and the in-person, one-day NCYI will be held at NC State on Friday, April 1st, 2022.

If you have any questions or to learn more about the process of this program, contact the North Carolina Youth Institute State Coordinator Dr. Lori Unruh Snyder at lori_snyder@ncsu.edu | (919) 515-4070 or Liz Driscoll, liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu | (919.886.3424)

2020 Gives Us A Different Perspective

This article was written for the Robesonian by our own Shea Ann DeJarnette, 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent.

Welcome to 2022. What’s great about a new year are the possibilities and hope for a positive future. We have lots of things we are looking forward to in our lives, communities, and world this year. That being said, we have a lot of things to look forward to in 4-H. We started back, masked, face to face last year and even had overnight camp. So imagine how much more we might be doing this year.

I am going to qualify all of this by saying we will make sure everything we do involves a safe environment for all our youth and volunteers. Right now, what that means is smaller numbers and everyone wearing a mask when we aren’t outside, socially distanced. We have found our youth really have no issue wearing masks or following the guidelines. Most of the time they tell us they are so excited to be in a different environment they will do whatever they need to safely enjoy the experience. We appreciate their need and want to be together and enjoy hands-on learning opportunities. We are going to do our best to make the world a little more normal for them in 2022.

What is planned for this year? The easiest way to find out is to download our free Robeson County 4-H App (4-H Now!) from your app store. We are including a QR link for the app if you would like to download it. On the app is a calendar button which shows our programs month by month. You can even add the programs and deadlines to your own calendar or share them with friends and on social media if you would like.

We have several new SPIN clubs starting. The clubs meet for at least 6 hours (or more if they decide to) and work on specific projects. Our Teen 4-H club will start meeting in February, and we are excited about these new opportunities. These youth will be making a difference and we can’t wait. Also expect to see more information from our Art Hub 4-H Club, Hooks & Needles, a Video Gaming Club, as well as a host of other opportunities.

Besides clubs we have county programs; these include our public speaking competition, animal science program, and our summer day camps and week-long overnight camp. We will have leadership opportunities and community service opportunities for our youth. For adults we have training and some social outlets for our volunteers who love networking. Again, this is listed in our calendar, which can be found on our app and on our 4-H blog, https://robeson4-h.blogspot.com/.

So, join us in 2022 for some 4-H fun. We are always full of possibilities and hope for our future working with youth. Wouldn’t you like to be part of it too? Looking forward to seeing you this year.

Announcement from State 4-H Office Concerning State Volunteer Leader's Conference

We have made the decision to cancel Volunteer Leaders' Conference for 2022 due to COVID.  The Association does have business to conduct, so we will hold a virtual business meeting on Saturday, February 5 from 10:00 - 11:30 am.  Following a short statewide business meeting including electing State officers and voting on bylaw and constitution changes , districts will have the opportunity to go into breakout rooms for district business meetings.  To attend this meeting, please register here and more information will be sent to you.

We miss seeing everyone face to face and our plan is to have a face to face Spring Training Day where we will recognize award winners, will have workshops, and have networking opportunities.  As soon as we know that date and more, I'll be back in touch.  Please go ahead and mark your calendar for February 3-4, 2023 for Volunteer Leaders' Conference 2023.

Stay Well,

Sarah

New State Officer Position

The NC 4-H State Council is excited to announce that starting this year there will be five (5) district and state 4-H officer positions available for youth members. The new officer position is "Member Engagement."  This is an exciting new role for our council system.  Please take a few minutes and review the attached document for details and SHARE the information with your youth membership. Several districts have started their initial plans for their Teen Retreats, and it's the council hopes that this new leadership opportunity will be one that our youth will be interested in and willing to run for.  Please contact me directly if you have any questions. Many thanks, Mitzi

4-H Online is Back!

Well folks it's back!  4-H 2.0 has been rolled out for North Carolina for 2022 and it is time for you to re-enroll your family, child, and or update your volunteer status.  When you are done we will receive an email saying it has been submitted and we will approve it.

Adult Volunteers when you start you need to choose that you are a level 1 or level 2 volunteer.  Most of you will be level 1.  There is a training video you must watch in its entirety (even though you watched it last year).  The system will let us know if you watched it and then we will be able to re-enroll you.  Also please make sure to check your screening section.  It is important to fill out as much of that as you can.

Parents please double check your child's clubs and if the are a member at large please make sure it is Robeson County not Alamance.  If you get stuck in the club section just back out and come back to it.  We are asking that everyone get registered by the end of January.

Click here to go to the site.    Please know we also have this linked on the app under join.  This version is mobile friendly so you can maneuver it on your smart device.  If you have any questions please contact Wendy (wrmaynor@ncsu.edu) or myself (sadejarn.ncsu.edu).

Tinker Opportunity for Families

Please see the announcement from NC A&T concerning their Tinker Box Pilot Program.  If your family fits the criteria and you are willing to be part of the program beginning to end please contact Shea Ann or Wendy at sadejarn@ncsu.edu or wrmaynor@ncsu.edu for more information or to register.  This is a first come first serve program so contact us as soon as possible if you are interested.

NC 4-H Tinker Box Pilot Program
Research Background
Research shows that when there is disconnect between school and home or community life, students can feel like science is impractical or in contradiction with their lives, which may be one of the most important reasons why some students don’t engage deeply in science (Chakraverty, Newcomer, Puzio, Tai, 2020). Research also shows that young people develop both interest and skills in STEM when someone from their family is involved. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of 21,000 8th graders surveyed said that family members taught them about building things, fixing things or understanding how they work. Only 13% said that they were taught these skills by teachers (STEM Factsheet: Supporting STEM Success among African American Students, 2016).
Pilot Program Registration and Logistics
The 4-H Tinker Boxes will allow families to experience 4-H STEM activities at home as a self-paced family project. Families will have the opportunity to request a tinker box using a Qualtrics Link that will be shared with NC 4-H staff. Quantities are limited and we do request that families request one box per child at this time. If you have two kids around the same age that can work together, please do so in order to allow as many families to participate as possible. If a waitlist is necessary, all that are moved to the waitlist will be notified via email. All those that will receive a box will also be notified once boxes ship. Agents and Program Assistants will be notified as families sign up.
The boxes are themed with national celebrations and holidays. As families register, they will be invited to also register for an event or events to either showcase their work or to join the 4-H STEM team online for guidance on how to complete the activity.
Photos and Videos
Families will be asked to share pictures and videos to a private folder in OneDrive. They may also share their work via social media using the hashtags provided in the letter for the box. The photo/video release is included in the registration.
Program Evaluation
A very important component of this pilot is the evaluation. Please make sure that the activities/challenges are complete within a month of receipt and that the evaluation is returned. We will not be able to continue this effort beyond this year without data that says that is working and reaching our NC families. Families will be able to receive boxes throughout the year, however those that do not return the evaluation may be moved to the waitlist.
