Congratulations to our Junior Master Gardener Day Campers who are now officially certified as Junior Master Gardeners. Each got their own certificate today as they graduated from this intensive program each saying they knew a whole lot more than they knew before they came.
Our day started with our what we liked and learned over the last few days. then it was time to start our activities. We checked on our worms (they were very happy) and our biodegradable pots. We checked our soil layers and then worked on planting things. We used our pots to plant seeds, and made salad in a glove. It was lots of fun. We got to start a pineapple plant from the top of a pineapple that had rooted (yes we learned about that too). Most fun was learning about succulents and playing with a ginormous aloe plant. We had a chance to plant leaves, and disassemble leaves, we scraped out the aloe gel and made our very own aloe lotion which is very healing.
All day long we had the chance to color really neat coloring pages while we learned. Many of them involved things we had seen this week. We also got the chance to take home the blueberries we dehydrated as well as the candied blueberries Mrs. Janice made for us. Miss Shea Ann also packaged up our peanut butter that we made so that we can try it at home. We can't wait to check out all our goodies.
After lunch we went to the garden and harvested enough for everyone to take home fresh fruit. We also had the chance to make our own JMG commercials. We split into three teams and each wrote and acted out a commercial that we hoped would be 30 seconds or less. It was a lot of fun and we got to talk about the neat things we learned about. If you would like to see our commercials you can click on these links, Team 1, Team 2, and Team 3, to view them.
A brief snack of popcorn, and learning how it pops (by the way did we mention popcorn is growing in the raised bed garden?) was on our agenda along with a slideshow from the weeks top moments. We had a lot of fun at this camp and not to worry every camper will receive a formal invitation to join our Dirty Rascals Junior Master Gardener Day camp. Its one way to keep the learning going year round!
