2020 Hippology Champions
The 2020 N.C. 4-H Hippology Contest was held on March 7 at NC State University. Twenty-four Senior Rookies and 61 Junior Rookies competed in the Hippology event for the first time! In the senior division, there were 70 contestants and 15 teams. The junior division featured 66 contestants and 18 teams. Ten Cloverbud contestants also navigated stations and placed two classes: Quarter Horse halter and Hunter Under Saddle.

Sr Champion: Elayna Samson, Duplin

Jr Horseman of the Year: Saona Wilcox, Alamance
Res. Jr Horseman of the Year: Jenna Garrison, Burke

2020 Horsebowl Champions
The 2020 N.C. 4-H Horsebowl contest was held on March 7 at NC State University. This event featured 34 teams that competed in the junior, mixed, and senior divisions.

Junior Division:
High Individual: Saona Wilcox, Alamance
Champion Team: Alamance (Team members: Saona Wilcox, Alexa Sigmon, McKennah Allred, Deborah Rezin, Joanna Rezin, coached by Reagan Riddell)

Mixed Division:
High Individual: Lauren Williams, Gaston
Champion Team: Currituck (Team members: Elijah Campbell, Sori Suthers, Brooke Decant, Megan Armstrong, Leah Suthers, coached by Heather Campbell)

Senior Division:
High Individual: Hannah Williams, Union
Champion Team: Union (Team members: Hannah Williams, Hannah Ford, Ellie O'Connell, Elena Hamilton, coached by Megan Thomas)

2020 Horse Judging Contest Update
Due to current university restrictions regarding public gatherings, the NC 4-H Horse Program 4-H Horse Judging Contest will be held via an online contest April 16-21. This event will not be held in a live format this year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
We will be hosting live, online information sessions on horse judging topics on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Links to these weekly sessions will be posted in the News section of the website, and on our social media channels. If you are unable to attend the sessions live, they will be recorded. When youth are registered for the online contest, they will be given access to an NCSU Moodle page that will contain these recorded sessions, and additional preparation and practice materials prior to the contest. Registered coaches will also be given access to a coaches' Moodle page with the same preparation materials.

2020 NC 4-H Horse Program Eligibility Card Procedure 
Blank eligibility cards will no longer be available. Please follow the below steps to request an eligibility card for any 4-Her wishing to show a project animal at the NC State 4-H Horse Show. Eligibility cards are due May 1, 2020.

1. Any 4-Her (or parent) wishing to exhibit a project animal at the NC State 4-H Horse Show must submit an Eligibility Card Request Form. This is a form to be completed online that will ask for the same information that is generally on an eligibility card (horse and rider info, division, etc.) and will not require any signatures yet.
Pony measurements: If a pony was shown in a 2019 qualifying show, the height that was recorded in 2019 will be used for the 2020 State Show entry. If a pony was not shown, a copy of an NCHJA or USEF card can be sent in with the entry. If neither of those cards is available, the pony will need to measured on-site at the NC State 4-H Horse Show.

2. After this form is completed, an eligibility card will be generated by the State Office and will be sent to your county agent for review.

3. County agents will print the completed cards and arrange distribution to the leaders of the youth that have met county requirements for eligibility.

4. Once the printed card is in the possession of the 4-Her/leader, they are responsible for making sure that the card is signed by the parent/guardian, volunteer leader, and extension agent in order for the card to be valid. 

Qualifying Horse Show Updates
Due to the coronavirus, all 2020 qualifying horse shows will be canceled. At this time, we are optimistic the NC State 4-H Horse Show will still happen as originally planned. However, this year the show will be open to any 4-Her who wishes to participate who has an eligibility card approved by their agent.

The 2020 NC State 4-H Horse Show will be held July 8-12 in Raleigh at the Gov. James B. Hunt Horse Complex. NC State 4-H Horse Show Entry Forms and Exhibitor information forms will be available on the State Show page no later than April 1. The class list and list of judges are know posted on the event's web page. The postmark deadline for ALL State Show entries will be May 30.

Note about Pony Heights/Measuring: If a pony was shown in a 2019 qualifying show, the height that was recorded in 2019 will be used for the 2020 State Show entry. If a pony was not shown, a copy of an NCHJA or USEF card can be sent in with the entry. If neither of those cards is available, the pony will need to measured on-site at the NC State 4-H Horse Show. A schedule of pony measurement times will be provided in the exhibitor’s bulletin that will be emailed after entries are received.
Artistic Expression & Creative Writing Entries Now Open! 
Attention all 4-H horse-loving artists and writers: the 2020 NC 4-H Horse Program Artistic Expression and Creative Writing entry forms are available on the website.

Creative Writing contest invoices signed by your 4-H agent, payments, and 4 copies of your writing project(s) must be postmarked no later than May 1.

Artistic Expression online registration forms must be completed and submitted by May 1, 2020, or your entry will not be received. Exhibits must be submitted to the NC State 4-H Horse Show on July 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entries to be judged beginning at 5:00 p.m.

4-H Horsemanship Camp
Please read the following message from Millstone 4-H Camp:

"Parents and families - as the situation with the coronavirus continues to develop, we are monitoring information from the state, the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO). At this time, we are planning to move forward with our summer camping season business as usual, until or if we receive different information as the coronavirus continues to evolve over the next weeks and months. We are still accepting reservations and deposits. If our summer camp season is reduced or cancelled, we will not refund deposits - in accordance with our non-refundable deposit policy - but we will honor those deposits for a future camping season."

Endless Summer Horse Show Hosting 4-H Team Challenge Event
The NCQHA District IV Endless Summer Show will be held August 21-23 in Williamston, NC and will feature several "Non AQHA" classes for 4-H'ers that do not show Quarter Horses. There will be a 4-H Team Show Challenge where 4-H clubs can enter as many 5 person teams as they wish. Riders will receive points based on their placing. The team earning the Highest Number of Points for the entire show will be crowned champion and receive a team trophy and a cash prize for the club.
There will also be a 4-H Stall decorating contest and the winning club will receive a trophy and cash prize. See the links below for more information. If you have questions, please email David Spencer: d.spencer@westrock.com

AYHC Horse Smarts Updates
Horsebowl & Hippology competitors and coaches: The AYHC has updated its list of corrections to the Horse Smarts reference book. If you haven't already done so, go through and update your book and also print out a copy of the index (very handy to have when you need to find something quick).
