AIRE

AIRE looks like we are about to talk about astrological signs.  Actually in the world of 4-H stars AIRE stands for Application, Interview, Resume, and now instead of essay Electronic Video.  This is a state 4-H program that is the precursor to going on trips such as National 4-H Congress, National 4-H Conference, and International Leadership Conference.  Youth competitively compete utilizing all four components of the process and those with the highest scores in the end win the opportunity to attend one of these great opportunities.  To take part in the program and vie for a trip youth must be between 14-18 years of age and be a 4-H member.
This year we are proud to say that 4-H Member Maggie Underwood, County Council reporter and member of the Dirty Rascals JMG 4-H Club and Dirty Dozen Shooting Sports 4-H Club submitted her application, a resume, completed her electronic video and just this week went through the interview process.  We hope to hear how she did during our virtual 4-H Congress Experience this year.
If you are interested in being part of this program please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette, 4-H Extension Agent.  To learn more about this opportunity please visit the NC 4-H Program AIRE website page.

4-H Top 4 for the week of June 29, 2020

Good morning everyone.  Hope you had a great weekend and are looking forward to a fantastic Holiday weekend.  Just a few things to kick us off.

-If you have not downloaded the 4-H App please do so.  It is a great way to get instant reminders, you can add events to your electronic calendars, and register for programs with the click of a button.  So far everyone who has downloaded it and tried it is pleased with how user friendly it is and how much time it saves you from having to come to the office.  To download our app, just go to the app store on your phone and download 4-H Now!  When you open that app search for Robeson County 4-H tap on it and you will be linked to us.  The download and app are free.

-4-H Congress is for our 14-18 year old 4-H members.  There is still room available.  The cost this year is $25 for the virtual experience.  However thanks to our United Way funds we can offset that so it is $15 for members and $10 for County Council Officers.  Registration can be found on the app, under programs, or by clicking this link:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/robeson-county-4-h-congress-registration-tickets-109689074976.  For Questions please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette, 4-H Extension Agent.

-We are excited to announce a brand new program.  This is a virtual 4-H Jr. County Retreat.  The event will be held virtually over Zoom and be led by our amazing teen 4-H County Council Officers.  Our youth will have the chance to work on a Citizenship project, take part in interactive Trivia Challenges, and try to work their way out of a virtual Escape Room.  The event will take place July 31, from 3-5 pm.  This event is free and open to all Robeson County 4-H members enrolled in 4-H Online.  To register please click this link:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/robeson-county-4-h-congress-registration-tickets-109689074976.  For questions please contact Shea Ann DeJarnette, 4-H Extension Agent.

-We still have spots available in our 4-H Summer Fun events.  Arts and Crafts Day Camp, Biotech, and Cloverbud day camp.  Please check the programs tab on the app and scroll to find the opportunity you would like to register your child for.  You can also register from our Summer Fun blog post found here:  http://robeson4-h.blogspot.com/2020/06/4-h-summer-fun-virtual-style.html

That is all we have for this week.  Our office is closed on Friday, July 3 in honor of Independence Day.  We hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend and we are looking forward to seeing you online soon.
Thanks,
Wendy, Christy, and Shea Ann

There is an App for That

Please see the article below written by Shea Ann DeJarnette, 4-H Extension Agent for the Robesonian and Robeson Journal.  This article may also be found on the NC Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center website.

We have been sitting on this news since February, waiting for a lot of approvals. Now we have them, and I have the distinct honor to tell you, Robeson County 4-H has an app! I can hear the responses now from, “How cool!” to “Who doesn’t?” and even the “Oh no, not another app.”  I understand each and every one of those responses. Let me give you a little background, so you can see why we have an app.

For starters, the Robeson County 4-H Program is the first in the state of North Carolina to have an app. I guess you could say, we are the first to plant the seed. We needed to plant this seed, because about a year ago, the state switched to a new online registration system for 4-H, which meant getting rid of the paperwork. On one hand this is great, because it takes a lot of room for storage and sometimes chasing folks down to fill out the paperwork becomes a logistical nightmare for everyone involved. Now everyone can register for 4-H from the convenience of their computers or mobile devices. It’s a great system except for one little thing, when we send out an email, the system sometimes drops the email addresses with no rhyme or reason. That makes communicating difficult. We used our blog, emails, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Remind. That became too difficult for people to find and for us to continue generating. We did what we teach our youth to do and problem solved. Hence the app. On the 4-H app, not only can you see what is going on, you can get push notifications as reminders and see all of our social media with the touch of a button. That makes communication easier for everyone.

Communication is only one benefit of the app. In January, we started to transition to an online registration system for Extension activities called Eventbrite. Then COVID-19 hit. In an effort to keep people safe and still make program registration easy, we were able to switch over and plug that into our app. It takes less than two minutes now to register your child for a 4-H program through the app. If payment is necessary, you can pay when you register them. It’s amazingly simple and user-friendly. Oh, did we mention, it’s free?

If you are interested in checking out our app, please go to your App Store and download 4-H Now! When you open the app, you will be prompted to pick a program to download. You will need to choose Robeson County 4-H. It’s that simple.

So when you have a moment, help us germinate this seed by downloading the app and telling your friends. Robeson County 4-H is in the community, and we need your help spreading the word. After all, the more youth involved, the larger and brighter they will bloom.
