What an incredible week we had at Robeson County 4-H Biotech Day Camp! Throughout the week, our young scientists explored the exciting world of biotechnology through hands-on activities, educational field trips, and unforgettable experiences. From learning about environmental science and military medicine to experimenting with slime and optical illusions, campers discovered that science is everywhere!
Here's a look back at our amazing week.
Monday: Powering Curiosity
We kicked off the week by meeting one another and learning what biotechnology really is—using living things and science to solve real-world problems.
We kicked off the week by meeting one another and learning what biotechnology really is—using living things and science to solve real-world problems.Our first stop was Harris Energy & Environmental, where campers learned how energy production and environmental stewardship work together to protect our natural resources. They asked thoughtful questions and gained a better understanding of how science and technology help keep our communities running while caring for the environment.
After a delicious lunch at the State Farmers Market Restaurant, campers enjoyed getting to know one another better and sharing what they were most excited to learn during camp.
By the end of the first day, new friendships had already formed, and campers were eager for the adventures still to come. To see our youth power up from this great experience check out our photos from today.
Tuesday: A Day of Discovery
Tuesday was packed with exploration and hands-on learning.
Our first destination was Discovery Place Kids–Rockingham, where science came alive through interactive exhibits. Campers explored engineering, physics, biology, and technology while learning through play. Whether building structures, experimenting with water flow, or discovering how simple machines work, there was something exciting around every corner.
After a delicious lunch at the Taco Factory, we traveled to the Hamlet Depot & Museums, where campers explored how railroads changed transportation, communication, and industry throughout North Carolina. They learned how engineering innovations transformed travel and helped shape communities across our state.
Throughout the day, campers discovered that science and technology have always played an important role in connecting people and improving everyday life.

Wednesday: Becoming Scientists
Wednesday was all about hands-on biotechnology!
Back at the Robeson County Cooperative Extension Center, campers became scientists as they participated in laboratory activities and biotechnology experiments. They explored scientific concepts through engaging, age-appropriate investigations that encouraged observation, teamwork, and problem-solving.
After enjoying Chick-fil-A for lunch, campers continued experimenting and discussing how biotechnology is used every day in agriculture, medicine, food production, and environmental conservation.
By the end of the day, everyone had gained confidence using scientific tools, thinking like researchers, and working together to solve scientific challenges.

Thursday: Science in Service
Thursday highlighted how science has impacted our nation's history.
Our morning began at the CSS Neuse Museum, where campers learned about one of the few remaining Confederate ironclad gunboats. They explored how engineering, materials science, and innovation influenced naval technology during the Civil War. Special thanks to the staff at the CSS Neuse for the great hands on activities. Writing secret Code may be part of our futures and our past.
Following lunch at the Queen Street Deli, we traveled to the G.I. Joe's Military Living History Museum. Campers learned about military history while discovering how biotechnology, medicine, communication systems, and engineering have improved the safety and effectiveness of our armed forces over the years. Youth learned the history from real life veterans who made things come alive for our youth. Special thanks to Mr. Mat who hug with us this afternoon and his dad Mr. Mike who made this world come alive and made our campers think about events that have shaped their world.

Friday: A Sticky, Silly, and Spectacular Finale
Our final day was filled with laughter and unforgettable memories!
Campers got creative at the Slime Kitchen, learning about polymers and the chemistry behind one of everyone's favorite science experiments. Mixing ingredients, playing with scents (yes some were better than others-Monkey Fart) testing different textures, and creating colorful slime made science both educational and incredibly fun.
Next, we visited Ripley's Illusion Lab, where campers explored optical illusions, perception, and the amazing ways our brains interpret the world around us. Every exhibit challenged them to think critically while having fun with hands-on science.
Following lunch at Johnny D's Waffles, we wrapped up an incredible week by reflecting on everything we had learned—from DNA and biotechnology to engineering, environmental science, chemistry, and teamwork.
There were plenty of smiles, lots of laughter, and maybe even a few sad faces as campers said goodbye to the new friends they had made throughout the week. To see all the day's fun please click this link.
Looking Back
4-H Biotech Day Camp showed our campers that science isn't just something found in textbooks—it's all around us. Every museum visit, experiment, challenge, and conversation helped build confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking skills while encouraging youth to explore future careers in STEM.
Throughout the week, campers learned that biotechnology touches nearly every part of our lives—from protecting our environment and improving agriculture to advancing medicine and inspiring new inventions. Most importantly, they discovered that asking questions, working together, and trying new things are at the heart of scientific discovery.
A huge thank you goes to our volunteers, community partners, museums, restaurants, and families for helping make this week such a tremendous success.
We hope everyone left inspired to keep exploring, experimenting, and discovering the amazing world of science. We can't wait to welcome the next generation of young scientists to 4-H!
