Herter-O'Neal Scholarship

   Attached are the links  for the 2021 Herter-O'Neal Scholarship Application, along with the Application Guidelines and Brochure.  We are publishing this for our local high schools and other institutions of higher learning.  This scholarship is made possible by the members of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Association of Administrative Professionals.

The deadline for returning the Application this year is March 17, 2021, and should be returned to Deborah Goncalves, Administrative Assistant in Onslow County, at Deborah_Goncalves@ncsu.edu.  Once we receive all applications, the Professional Development Committee will review them and choose a single application to forward to the State level as the Southeast District's Scholarship nominee for 2021.

Let's make 2021 the year that a student from the Southeast District takes home this honor.

Want to be a 4-H Ambassador?

 

  Calling all 14-18 year old 4-H Members!  Would you like to be a 4-H Ambassador?  What is a 4-H Ambassador you ask?  That's a great question.  Let's take a look at this state wide 4-H program.

  The mission of the North Carolina 4-H Program is to empower teen 4-H leaders with the knowledge, skills and aspirations necessary to be effective advocates for NC 4-H Youth Development.  In other words you will serve as positive role models for younger youth, build meaningful partnership with other teens and adult volunteer leaders, while promoting 4-H in North Carolina.

How might you go about doing that you ask?    Another great question.

To apply to be an ambassador, a 4-H member must be at least 14 years old and have been a member for 2 years as of January 1.

You will go through a series of workshops to move up to different levels.  There are 4 levels that start at bronze and go through emerald.

You can only do one level per year and it is suggested not taking more than 2 years to complete a level.

Each level requires attendance at core workshops, and a minimum number of elective workshop or activity hours.  To learn more about the requirements please click this link.

Wait!  My parents want to know how much this costs?  It is free.  It will just take your time, and dedication to get it done.  It is self paced so you set your goal and schedule to make it happen.

Are you interested in being a SE District Officer?  You have until March 1 to apply.  Please read the instructions below and have your packet to the Robeson County 4-H Staff by March 1.

Candidate Requirements

• District Officer candidates must be at least fourteen years of age (as of Jan. 1, 2021)
• District Officer Candidates must have been an active member of 4-H for at least 2 years prior to seeking a district office. 
• District Officer Candidates must be currently enrolled and have an "Approved" member profile in 4-HOnline 2.0. 
• District Officer candidates must complete and submit their electronic "District Officer Nomination Packet" to their 4-H agent by the locally determined due date. 
• Due to COVID-19: The required nomination signatures can be obtained via an email (i.e. an email attachment or screenshot of a statement of support will be accepted in lieu of signatures). 

Agent Requirements 

• An agent who supports putting forth a candidate's nomination packet is required to electronically submit their candidate(s) nomination packet to both their District's Agent Advisor and to Mitzi Downing, State 4-H Council Advisor by March 1, 2021. 

4-H Horse Update

 

NC 4-H Horse Program Newsletter  Volume 7, Issue 1 January 2021 Upcoming Educational Contests NC 4-H Horse Program Educational Event & Horse Show Sponsors Needed! As we prepare for the 2021 contest and show season, the NC 4-H Horse Program is seeking donors to support the six different educational contests and the State 4-H Horse Show. For more details, and to make a contribution, please use the forms linked below. Sponsorships can be paid via check or online using the link in the payment information section on the forms. 2021 Education Sponsorship Request 2021 NC State 4-H Horse Show Sponsorship/Vendor Request Virtual Horsebowl Practice Sessions NC 4-Hers are invited to participate in virtual horsebowl practices for their age division (Junior Rookie, Junior, Senior Rookie, Senior). These practices are open to everyone so 4-Hers can learn more about horsebowl, practice answering questions, and meet other horse-loving 4-Hers from across the state! Participants will also become comfortable with playing matches in a virtual format, and have a chance to test their internet connection. Youth can sign up for as many of the practices as they wish; please just sign up no later than 9:00 AM the day of the practice. For more information, to see the practice schedule, and to sign up for the practices, please visit the Horsebowl page on the website. 2021 Virtual Horsebowl Challenge Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, and the inability of districts to host qualifying events, the 2021 NC 4-H Horsebowl Contest will not be held in person. However, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering a Virtual Horsebowl Challenge on March 13th. The details for this event are outlined below. Divisions: Junior Rookie (youth ages 8-13 that have never competed in a Horsebowl Contest on the District or State level) Junior (youth ages 8-13) Senior Rookie (youth ages 14-18 that have never competed in a Horsebowl Contest on the District or State level) Senior (youth ages 14-18 that have not competed in national-level horsebowl contests) More information can be found here. The deadline to register is March 1. 2021 Hippology Contest Save the date! The 2021 NC State 4-H Hippology contests will be held on March 27th. Depending on COVID restrictions, this event may be held in person at NCSU. If restrictions are in place that prohibit an in-person event, the contest will be moved to an online format and will take place on this same day. If restrictions are in place that prohibit an in-person event, the contest will be moved to an online format and will take place on this same day. Contestants will give oral reasons via Zoom. Achievement Awards Program The NC 4-H Horse Program Achievement Award is an annual application/submission of accomplishments within 4-H, with a specific focus on horse program achievements that is cumulative beginning with the applicant’s first year in the horse program. There are 4 levels of accomplishment that youth can apply to earn annually. Youth can potentially earn more than level (especially the first year they apply). Bronze: 150 points, bronze patch Silver: 300 points, silver patch Gold: 450 points, gold patch Emerald: 700 points, embroidered jacket Applications are due MARCH 1, 2021. For further information on the new awards program, and the application forms, check it out here. 2021 NC 4-H Horsemanship Camp Canceled The NC 4-H Camping Program has had to make some difficult decisions regarding overnight summer camps at their 3 facilities for the 2021 season. In the interest of safety, the Camping Program has determined that only traditional 4-H resident camps will be held in a limited capacity this summer. Unfortunately, this means that Horsemanship Camp will not be held during the summer this year. However, we encourage all of our campers to visit Millstone's webpage for information on how they can still participate in resident camp this summer.  The NC 4-H Horse Program has currently reserved the weekend of September 10-12 at Millstone in hopes that we will be able to hold a weekend horsemanship camp by this time of the year. Please check back to this page as it will be updated as we get closer to that date. Virtual Hippology Academy In the absence of the Youth Training Clinic, we will be launching two virtual academies to assist both 4-Hers and coaches in preparing for Hippology and Horse Judging. The Hippology Academy will open on February 1st. There is a registration fee of $15.00, and it is only open to North Carolina 4-H'ers and coaches. IF YOUTH SIGN UP FOR THE HIPPOLOGY ACADEMY, THEIR ENTRY FEE FOR THE 2021 HIPPOLOGY CONTEST IS WAIVED! When the link to sign up for the academy is available, it will be available on the Hippology Contest webpage. Virtual Horse Judging Academy Coming Soon! The Horse Judging Academy will feature videos and presentations to help prepare youth for judging contests and oral reasons! Open Horse Show Judges' Academy Now Available This virtual academy is designed to provide the open horse show judge, or those studying to become an open horse show judge, with additional learning resources through a virtual platform through a variety of disciplines. Each section will have recorded lectures from a variety of experienced judges and instructors that you can view as many times as you desire. Each section will also have practice classes that you can place on your own, followed by an official placing and reasons for that placing. There are also additional quiz sections to test your knowledge of each section. No grades are assigned for the completion of this course; these quizzes are intended as an additional educational tool to help you retain the material. If you would like to be featured in our newsletter, please click here to fill out a short survey! Michaela Vick Michaela is an alumnus of 4-H, who joined 4-H in 2005. She was active until she aged out in 2018, after that she was a student worker in the State 4-H office from 2019-2020. Michaela graduated from NCSU in December 2020, with a degree in Animal Science. We are going to miss having her (and all her practical jokes) in the office! Michaela is currently job hunting, but we know that no matter where life takes her, 4-H and the horse program will always follow her. We can’t wait to have her back as a leader, coach, and volunteer! What activities, events, or contests did/have you participate(d) in? I competed in all of the Horse Program Educational Events: Horsebowl, Hippology, and Horse Judging. In addition, I also did livestock projects and judging, poultry judging, presentations, public speaking contests, and 4-H Horse Shows. What are your favorite memories from 4-H? Traveling for the National contests are my favorite memories, in particular, Cattleman's Steakhouse is at the top of the list. Please describe a particular horse program accomplishment that you are most proud of: In my last year as a 4-Her, I won the Senior Western Horse High Point award at the State 4-H Horse Show in 2018. It was great to win this award with a horse that I trained myself and had really built a partnership with. Please describe something non-horse or non-4-H related that you enjoy doing or in which you have experienced success. I enjoy traveling! I had the opportunity to travel to London last spring, pre-COVID, with my Mom. I love getting to see the world and spend time exploring new places.
