4-H Sourdough Project

We are excited to announce this brand new 4-H STEM opportunity.  Burke, Orange, and Richmond counties have organized this event and are opening it up to the state, so we thought we would join forces.

This project is open to youth ages 11-18.

On January 26 from 6-7 over zoom Youth will learn about the mystery of microbes and bread.  At the end they will have everything they need to measure height and pH, track the growth of a microbial zoo over time and share the data with REAL scientists.
Supplies needed to conduct the experiment:
2 cups of Flour (any kind except coconut)
Dechlorinated water (bottled, filtered, or tap water that was left out overnight)
Mason style glass or jar (or something similar half pint or pint sized-or a regular drinking glass)
Cloth or paper napkin
Rubber Band
Ruler
Measuring spoons (teaspoon and Tablespoon)
Spoon or butter knife for mixing

Youth will learn the process and make their starter on January 26th.  They will need to take five minutes each day for the next 15 days to feed their starter and collect their results.
Each youth needs to be registered.  Registration is open now until January 22.  This is the link:  go.ncsu.edu/dough  You many register through the link on our 4-H App if that is helpful for anyone.  Please let us know if you have any questions by calling (910) 671-3276.
