Fair + Animals = Saturday at the Fair
The first Saturday at the Robeson County Fair starts even before the gates open. People from around the region, and 4-H members working on animal science projects start arriving around 7:30 in the morning. That is check-in time for animals competing in shows and the open exhibits. Now if you are wondering what the difference is, the open exhibits are animals that are caged at the fair for a week but do not take part in actual shows. Judges compare similar animals to determine first, second, third and participant status. The top three places when cash awards. Those who are competing in shows come at a predetermined time to actually get their animal out of the cage and show it in the ring as part of an organized show.
As animals were coming in from around our region other prep work was going on; the rides were warming up, the smell of sausages began wafting from vendor stations, and other contests were getting ready to happen.
However in the livestock building we were preparing for our first show of the fair season, the goat show. Believe it or not this is one of the largest shows of the Robeson County Fair. More than 100 goats were entered with almost 70 participants (both youth and adults). We started with the 4-H showmanship goat show. This is where youth broken up into age groups show their goat but the judge is looking at how well the showmen do, not the goats. The cloverbud division goes first. Cloverbuds are our 5-8 year olds who show but it is a non competitive division. Each youth receives a participant ribbon and ten dollars for their efforts. In our cloverbud division we had; Summerlyn Anderson, Brennon Bullard,Taylor Chappell, Eddie DeBerry, Bryce Godwin, Abigail Hamilton, Eli Maske, Madison McInnis, and DeLani Reep. All nine also showed again in a cloverbud market show where they once again received ribbons.
In the Junior 9-10 age division in showmanship Brianna Hamilton walked away with the blue ribbon, Savannah Chappell took home the red ribbon, Kristen DeBerry took home third and Ashley Rogers rounded out the division in fourth place.
In the junior 11-13 age division the competition was tough. Walking away with first place Davis Moye took home first place, Bethany Thompson took home second, Alana McQueen walked away with the white ribbon while the division was rounded out by; Jordan Carroll, Sarah Maske, Michaela McInnis, Krisiti Reep, Madelyn Chappell, Matthew Acorn, Jordan Rogers, Peggyann Kennedy, Benjamin Herndon, Ally Spivey, Taylor Tarte, and Hannah Britt.
In the Senior Division there were a large number of showman making the decision tough. Taking home blue in this division was Morgan Honeycutt, Dixie Acorn walked away with second place and Grayson McQueen in third place. Rounding out the division was; Morgan Rockwell, Nathan Ezell, John R. Walton, Santiago Acuna Robeson, Cole Mullis, Darren Leffler, Corey Lee, Herbert Jones, Matthew West, Caleb Iyob, Charles Chestnut, Justin Brock, Christina Peterson, Zachary Bogden, John Holloman, and Chloe Edwards.
The next show was the 4-H Market Class Show. The market class show is based on the weight of the goats. There are three divisions, lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. In the lightweight division Bethany Thompson with Scooter took first place, Delani Reep with Hershey took home the red ribbon, while Matthew West with goat 119 took home the white ribbon. Rounding out this category was; John R. Walton with Top Gun, Nathan Ezell with goat 14, Taylor Tarte with Bullet, Matthew Acorn with Jack, Micheala McInnnis with Iceman, Zachary Brogden with goat 373, Jordan Rogers with Billy, Kristen DeBerry with Ups, Chloe Edwards with goat 42, Charles Chestnut with goat 15, Christina Peterson with goat 247, and John Holloman with goat 41.
In the middleweight division Nathan Ezell with goat 1541 took home first place, Bethany Thompson with skipper took home second while Santiago Acuna-Robeson with Jerry took home third. Rounding out the middleweight division were; Grayson McQueen with Hercules, Kristi Reep with Sic 'em Sam; Davis Moye with TomTom, Abigail Hamilton with Spirit, Santiago Acuna-Robeson with Checho, Darren Lefler with Jake, Kristen DeBerry with Lightening, Dixie Acorn with Gem, Benjamin Herndon, Bryce Godwin with Butter Bean, Dixie Acorn with Biscuit, Justin Brock with goat 379, Corry Lee with goat 380, and Eddie DeBerry with Hopper.
In the heavyweight division winning a blue ribbon was Cole Mullis with Bob, the red ribbon went to Cole Mullis with Lebrone, and the third place ribbon went to Jordan Carroll with Bullett. Rounding out this division were; Grayson McQueen with Sampson, John R. Walton with Tank, John R. Walton with Air Force One, Morgan Honeycutt with Cracker Jack, Alana McQueen with Champ, Morgan Honeycutt with Friendly Mart, Madelyn Chappell with Pilgrim, Taylor Chappell with Bubba, Brianna Hamilton with Patrick, Jordan Carroll with Torpedo, Caleb Iyob with goat 374, Brenon Bullard with Drew, Morgan Rockwell with Dracula, Eli Maske with Rocket, Sarah Maske with Chewy, Savanah Chappell with Hershey, and Peggyann Kennedy with Cookie. Grand Champion went to Nathan Ezell with goat 1541, and Reserve Champion went to Bethany Thompson with Skipper.
After the 4-H goat shows we had the Youth/Adult Breeding meat goat shows. Many of the 4-H members stay to compete in this show as well. These shows are divided into percentage doe or buck by birth date, and full blooded doe and buck based on birth date. All and all there are four divisions to this show.
In the percentage doe show the categories round out to...
