Farm Families

Do you live on a farm or ranch?  Then this information is for you.

Researchers at the National Farm Medicine Center and The Ohio State University are looking for farmers and ranchers who are raising children 0 to 18 to participate in an online survey. The survey asks about your families’ experiences of taking care of children (age 0 to 18) while also working on and off the farm/ranch. The survey is open to part time and full time farmers, ranchers, and their partners operating in rural, urban, or suburban areas. Participants have the option to enter a raffle for one of fifty $50 checks.

To fill out the 15 to 20 minute survey, visit this link: https://redcap.link/Survey1_FarmersRaisingChildren

Govenor's Page Program

Please see the following information about the Governor's Page Program.  This is geared towards juniors and seniors in High School.

Hello,

My name is Erinn and I am the coordinator of the Governor’s Page Program. I wanted to share that the 2023 program year application is now open! The Governor’s Page Program offers students an in-depth view of state government. During the week, Pages will be onsite in the Governor’s Office and will also tour government buildings and historic sites including the Legislative Building, the State Capitol, the Executive Mansion, and the North Carolina Museum of History. In addition, pages will have the opportunity to develop a policy proposal with policy officials from various state government departments. You can find more information on our website here: https://governor.nc.gov/governors-page-program, or on the attached flyer.

Please share the information with any students who you think would be interested. We are looking for students who are willing to learn and think creatively. There is no gpa requirement so any students may apply in their junior and senior year. Attached is the flier for the program, a flier for a specialized week tailored to Black student leaders, and a flier for a specialized week tailored to LatinX/Hispanic student leaders.

Thank you for your time.

Best,

Educational Grant Opportunity

Running Strong for American Indian youth is proud to announce that we have $25,000 dedicated to supporting Native artists.

In 2021 Running  Strong for American Indian youth launched Dreamstarter Creative to support Native Artists. Artists are cultural protectors, tradition keepers, and valuable contributors to the contemporary American art world as they connect Native traditions with an ever changing and challenging world. Running Strong is proud to support Native creators who describe and celebrate Indigenous cultures in their work, in whatever form that may be.  We encourage any artists, from any medium to apply for a grant of up to $2,500 to help support their craft, and further their art education. We will select 10 Native creators from our applicants to award $2,500 each. Grant funds may be used for supplies, materials, workshops and seminars, professional development and/or stipends for cultural bearers that you’d like to consult with. All applications are due by April 4th, 2023 11:59 EST. Selected applicants will be notified on April 18th, 2023.

During your grant year as you expand your knowledge and your craft you will complete 3-5 pieces of work that reflect this year’s theme. This year’s theme will focus on Native communities and their interactions with changing landscapes, from traditional lands to urban landscapes. A complete list of prompts is located on our website.

Horticulture Science Institute

High school students are invited to spend a week at NC State University climbing trees, grafting tomatoes, snacking on raspberries, discovering new genes and so much more. The Horticultural Science Summer Institute is a residential, hands-on, pre-college program designed to engage youth into the many career opportunities within horticulture. Students will dig into workshops led by faculty, staff and students on topics ranging from breeding better vegetables, propagating ornamental shrubs, lengthening the life of cut flowers, learning sustainable production and design practices and delving into practical tools that enhance our understanding of plant processes. Students will visit unique and innovative North Carolina farms, nurseries, greenhouses and gardens.

Youth will also explore college-making decisions and leadership development, enjoy evening entertainment and team-building activities, live in a campus residence hall with campus dining. The camp provides a close-knit forum for high school students across the state (and country) to gather together and broaden their interest and knowledge about horticulture. Any high school student with a career or hobby interest within the field of agriculture and horticulture are encouraged to apply to the summer institute.

The cost for the week is $650 and includes on-campus lodging in the dorms, all meals, field trips, workshop materials, and a t-shirt. All high school youth are invited to join us for the 2023 North Carolina Youth Institute, a program that provides a platform for youth to research and give recommendations to solve key global challenges that range from food insecurity, access to potable water, poverty, human rights, engineering issues, and more. The NCYI is hosted by NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and is a part of the Global Youth Institute and the World Food Prize. This year’s program will offered both as an in-person program on campus or virtually on April 1st. Registration and paper submission are due March 13th (Registration will open soon).

Interested? Here are the steps to get started:

Step 1: Find a mentor: identify a mentor locally that really believes in you. This could be a teacher at your school, a 4-H club leader, a coach, FFA advisor, or a parent. They will help keep you on track and motivated to complete the paper.

Step 2:  Research and write your paper: to get started on your paper use this guide to:

Choose a country (besides your own)

Research a typical family

Choose a topic

Analyze the impact: How does your topic impact food security?

Solutions & recommendations: finding ideas for solutions can be tough. Start by researching what already exists.

Now write and format your paper!

Step 3: Register and submit your paper: you and your teacher/mentor register and submit your paper online by March 13, 2023

Step 4: Attend the North Carolina Youth Institute: on April 14, 2023 be part of an amazing in-person experience at North Carolina State University and become a Borlaug Scholar.

If you have any questions or to learn more about the process of this program, contact the North Carolina Youth Institute State Coordinator, Liz Driscoll at liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu or (919) 886-3424.
